how old can i go

I have a 25 cuddy that im converting from an i/o to an outboard. Im wondering what age can i reasonably go with an outboard. Of course I would love to have a brand new yamaha, but right now that is not possible. If i get an older motor and put a new power head on it, how reliable will it be. Let me know what yall think.

Had 93 Black Maxes that i couldn’t kill!!! Have newer yammy 4 strokes i can’t keep out of the shop…
Thinking you will have to go with something newer, just to get enough HP to push a 25’ boat without twins. Guessing you will need atleast a 250?

definatly looking at 250 hp. Dont need to be a speed deamon, just enough though.

If you could find a Yamaha OX66 250 with limited hours on it I would go with it. Even though it is a two stroke motor it is pretty fuel efficent and very reliable. I had one on my Contender that had over 800 hours on it before I traded it in and it was a very solid motot. My father in law had one on his Century and recently traded his in as well. Beleive he had close to 1000 hours on his and again no trouble at all. We both upgraded to Yamaha 250 4-stokes. Have been pleased, but neither one of us are saving as much on fuel has we had thought. At least the new motors are alot quieter and do not have to buy any 2-stroke oil. Hope this helps.
