How one little mistake can be a real PITA

OK, so my chain on the SeaPro 180CC gas cap breaks last September and I cleverly don’t spend $1.00 to buy a new chain to secure my gas cap.

The following sequence of events brings me to today:
-Lose gas cap (naturally)
-Unable to locate a replacement gas cap because the boat is 17 years old. There is nobody in now defunct SeaPro (including former dealers)who have any clue about the cap.
-I buy a Perko, White Cap, and Sea Dog cap - none of which fits.
-Order off brand cap from Amazon - still doesn’t fit.
-Buy filler tube and cap assembly from West Marine: $38.00
-Finally figure out how to remove old filler cap. Discover that SeaPro cut a hole that is slighty too big for the aftermarket filler tube I just bought. Two of the three screw holes will miss the deck if I try to mount it.
-Will have to buy a piece of Starboard and mount this under the factory cutout so the screws will have a place to bite.
-Had to fiberglass factory screw holes that were wallowed out with Marine Tex.
-Had to buy 1/8" sheet rubber to fabricate a seal to go under the fill tube.

Wish I had spent a $1.00 to secure my original gas cap.

By the way, despite my best efforts, a small piece of debris fell into the gas tube when I removed the old filler cap. This will certainly clog the carbs at the worst possible time.

Ain’t boating great?

How big of a piece of Starboard do you need? I have some black 1" thick stuff in small saucer or dinner plate sizes, I could part with one of them for you. I could probably cut it for you if you need.

Probably no more that 5" square. I’ve already put the boat up, but if it’s OK, I’ll check later this week and get back to you.

Thanks very much.

Yeah I have some just message me. May have some 3/4 and 1/4 that would work.

Thanks. I will be in touch later this week.
