How to catch Bait?

I am kind of new to striper fishing on Lake Murray and was wondering if anyone had advice on how to catch their own herrings? I am a college student and cant afford to spend $15 on herring every trip, any advice is appreciated. Thanks

I usually see herrin swimming around the towers. I cast my net over them and let it sink 15=20 feet. That was last year though, I havent tried this year.
