Welcome to the site Littledrummerboy and thanks for the video, I’ve got a question. Your video says your using snap swivels, are you using them to connect your main line to the leader and putting a fixed weight to them vs using a regular swivel with a sinker slide allowing the weight to slide, if so what is the reason for this, stationary weight vs sliding weight ? Second are you not using circle hooks and what is the reason for not doing so. I’m a surf fisherman as well and target reds, and was curious as to your thoughts and why you do these two things because its different from what I do, wanted to see if their is something to learn. Wish you the best here in South Carolina, I think you’ll find the fishing here just fine:smiley:

The bull red in the video swam away vigorously. Since the limit is one bull red per day in Louisiana, we occasionally keep them to eat, which is what happened with the one in the still picture of me with the Clemson ball cap.

There are tons of bull reds in LA. It’s not uncommon to catch 10-12 in one day. The day we made the surf fishing video, we caught 9 big bull reds. It was awesome.

Due to changing currents, we frequently change weights to hold the bottom. Using a snap makes this much quicker than a sliding sinker. Sliding sinkers are also harder to find in LA in weights over 1 oz. Depending on the casting technique, the bait and sinker can end up with more separation with a sliding sinker, which I do not prefer. If there is little current, I prefer the sliding sinker to reduce odds of a fish feeling the sinker when he picks up the bait. It may not matter. We catch lots with the pyramid sinkers snapped in.

Our hook up rates are simply much higher with the J hook we use than with anything else we’ve tried. Since LA allows keeping 1 per day per angler, “deep hooking” is not something we try and avoid. In SC, we may switch to circle hooks if it seems prudent for maximal survival rates.

Thanks for the reply. I have always wondered which is more effective a rig that stays put, or a rig that can move like it can with the sinker slide, I get that the fish wont feel the slide as easy, but with a stationary weight it stays put exactly where you drop it and that can be useful when you have found a hole thats producing. I would also think that the stationary weight is less easily pulled, but I dont know, thats why I ask.I’ve always used the slide method and it works well for me, but I think I will try using the stationary method the next time the current is ripping and see if it helps any, never too late to learn. Here is a pic of the slide I use, its different than what you were talking about. They do make other kinds that are a pain to open and bust up your finger nails but this one is real easy to open and switch out weights. They can be bought at haddrels tackle shop which is a really good store that many use locally 843 8813644. You said its not that uncommon to catch 10-12 reds in a day, you can do that here too, but not as easily, like your video said location, location, location. Good to talk to you and we look forward to seeing some local pics when it picks up again.

opps forgot photo.[:I]

Nice video. I think you’ll do just fine on SC beaches. You make it look easy in the video but like you said it’s all about location (and time of year.) Even I caught a dozen one day this season and left 'em biting and I don’t know jack about targeting the bulls.

The idea of seasonality is new to me, since we can score big on bull reds any month of the year in Louisiana. Sometimes my children are impatient and if I can’t put them on fish our first trip to the SC coast, I see lots of longer drives back to Louisiana in our future. Do you mind saying which months are the best bet for bull reds on the SC beaches?

Here off the Lowcountry beaches, late summer thru Dec. is best for a chance at a “Bull” Red (within the surf zone). With Oct.-Nov. being the hot months. And no need here to wade out and cast to Bermuda, they are usually close in.

Welcome to the site.

“There’s a fine line between fishing and standing in the surf like an idiot.”

A little story about my first experience with them in the surf. My wife and I were living in NC and took an anniversary vacation to Ocean Isle in Oct. with a condo overlooking the beach. I’d brought my boat down but had decided to go easy on the fishing in order to pay more attention to my spouse. We’d just settled on the porch with a drink in hand watching the fading evening light and feeling romantic when I noticed a number of boats in close in the surf. I commented to my wife that they must be catching the thick schools menhaden for the next day’s offshore trips. Then I picked up my binoculars and saw someone horse a monster red over the rail!
I looked at my wife and said, “I need to go to the tackle shop.” She rolled her eyes and sighed and I spent the evening reading inlet charts and re-rigging what was essential bass gear with 40 lb. braid and heavy leaders.

The next morning she agreed to go with me. We made it out of Shallotte inlet in rough surf and within minutes was hooked up with her first bull drum. I even shot a nice video of her fight, but as I backed up on the bow of my flats boat, I managed to walk right off the deck and into the ocean! I dropping my phone but saved my Tilley hat and Costas. She says I jumped back in the boat so fast she still wasn’t sure what had happened. I grabbed her phone and shot this pic before releasing the fish. We still laugh about it and she’s now as hooked on catching 'em as I am.
