I have seen people tearing up the Spades every time i am trolling for spanish and kings at a nearby reef and am going to give it a try next time im out there for a little bit. Can anyone share their much needed expertise on how to cut the jelly balls. From what i understand they dont sting, but am i supposed to use the harder outside part or the softer stuff on the inside? And how big of pieces should I use and on what size/type Hooks. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, I want get my dad back into saltwater fishing and put him on some spades if trolling doesnt work out.
I am no expert, but what I do is slice the “dome” in strips and put on the hooks ( remmember to use circle hooks ). 2nd i take a jelly ball & put it on a string in the water and draw the fish from the bottom to the surface. 3rd i take the jelly balls and place them where the motor is attached so the fish smell the " jucies"
Some people use a small meat grinder hand crank style, $30.00 at Walmart, and grind some jelly balls to attract the fish.
Also shrimp, dead or alive & fat back.
This answer “TOP SECRET”. Normally i would sell this type of information for a case of beer & some Jim Beam, or 2 wild women on my boat for a weekend. Enjoy yourself on the water
Put the jellies in a shallow container, take a knife and start hacking them up. They are easy to cut, and you need to cut them into small pieces. Use a TINY octopus circle hook and use the smallest chunks of jellies you can find in your container, and chum with the bigger chunks. Use the entire jelly for bait, it does not matter. And no, they don’t sting at all, just grab the thing.

True, but you want to be careful afterwards if you grab your thing. Jelly balls can cause skin discomfort …
quote:Really? Didn't know that! I do have this memory of going parasailing as a young teenager, and on the boat ride out the capt. stopped us over a massive school of baby cannonball jellies (2-3 inch diameter) and told us that we (a friend and I) could jump in and swim with them if we wanted, but they would kinda sting your bodies sensitive skin (inside of elbows, backs of knees etc.). We swam with them and I do remember feeling some discomfort.

I also read do not put them in your live well. Put them in a bucket.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
Very useful stuff. Going to try this weekend and hopefully will have some luck. Will post a report with some pics if I do, just hope to get my dad on some fish as our trips together are becoming fewer and farther between. Thanks for the great info!

Yes, keep them in a bucket because they really STAIN everything with which they come in contact.
