How to know if a school of fish are reds

This is probably a dumb question but… How do you tell if a school of fish is redfish? I can tell when it is just little FM or minnows, but sometimes I see big movements and they look like reds, but they could just be big mullet. I guess I could just chuck some lures or bait at them, but I would like to NOT work a school for a long time and find out they are mullet.

When u see a school of redfish you’ll know the difference… Big wake pushes of water vs small ones. Redfish aren’t schooled up real tight right now so you’ll only see one or two fish vs 50-100 like in the fall/winter months. As I said once you exprience seeing your first school of redfish busting bait you’ll never forget what it looks like.

I’ve been fooled before…saw lots of movement near some mud banks, splashing and “v’s” forming in the water. Got excited thinking they were reds…only to realize as I got a little closer that they were sting rays!! Knowledge comes with experience.

I’ve thrown many a fly to a tailing redfish on the marsh edge that magically turned into a stingray wing…

…because everything is a conspiracy!!!

Stingrays are always gettin your hopes up! I sometimes think I have got a nice red till I see the wings flapping!
