A real man would have used a treble hooks with 2 barbs buried.
In November, I was by myself and casting a Mirrolure Mirrodine minnow to schooling flats fish and catching them just about every cast. I was in a hurry removing the hooks and releasing fish, so I could cast again and catch more. On about the 5th fish, my fingers slipped while removing the front treble on a 30" fish, and my right thumb caught the back treble. So I had the fish in my left hand, and a #6 treble in my right thumb. What to do? I had to lay the fish down on the front deck to remove the front treble from the fish with pliers, and yes it did flop around with the other hook in my thumb. After freeing the fish and releasing it, I had to remove the hook from the lure. (not as easy as it seems) Lastly, I wrapped 30# mono around the bend, pushed the hook hard against my chest to disengage the barb, then yanked like Hell. It spurted blood but came out clean. Other than a little soreness, it was good as new 2 days after. It is very handy knowing how to remove embedded hooks. This was the 3rd time I’ve had to remove one from myself and 8th time overall.
I think anyone that fishes with baits with multiple treble hooks has had a bad experience with them at some time. If not it will happen.

mine was with a topwater plug. set the hook on a strike near the boat one day in shorts. I saw the lure fly my direction and new i missed the fish. turned around to locate the lure and couldnt see it as I was reeling in slack. The line got tight and I found it in a hurry. One of the treble hooks was just under my knee in as deep as it could go. I used the talledaga nights method of prying with a knife. Man that hurt
was fishing at the jetties one time and a friend was catching nice sized ladyfish on a jerk bait when one decided to jump right into the boat… and by in the boat I mean his arm, had the fish flopping around attached to him… ouch
“mr keys”
Once when I was a child in fishing in a small boat on a freshwater pond my friend tried to cast a rooster tail and hooked me in the ear. He thought it was hung on something and jerked it several times before he new he had hooked me. I had one hook in the back of the ear, one hook in the side of my head, and one hook in the crack where the ear and head meets. Luckily it was a small treble hook so it wasn’t as bad as it could have been but still was a mess.

When I was living in Daytona Beach, A friend of mine was a mate on a charter boat. They were cobia fishing and pulled in one that was still pretty green. The fish was flopping around the cockpit with the trailer hook flying around. The trailer hook managed to find its way into his man parts,[:0] right in the tip:dizzy_face:. He cut the leader, went into the cabin, pushed it through, cut off the barb, and pulled it back out. He poured peroxide on it, put on a bandage, and went right back to fishing. To this day it still makes me cringe.

Fishing at the grillage last Oct. My buddy hooked into a 30#+ red, fought it up boat side… I reached down to properly pull the fish by supporting it from the belly and mouth.
It was a full blown walmart style shark hook. Thru and thru, it wouldn’t move, we couldn’t cut it or budge it… off to the ER in Mt P. for a $2k extraction.
My fishing partner was moved up to the front of the boat, turned pure white and tried not to puke for the next hour. He was no help…
Dang Bob, I didn’t need to hear that story. OUCH!
“Apathy is the Glove into Which Evil Slips It’s Hand”.
All my treble hooks get the barbs smashed flat. Once the pressure is off they slide right out of the fish or your person. Never noticed any difference in my hook up or catch ratio with or without barbs.

True story…my family had a cat once that swated my fishing lure and it got stuck in his paw…I decided to wrap him up in a beach towel and yank it out…never…I repeat…never try that.
Ended up taking him to the vet and they put him in an aquarium looking thing…turned on the gas…put him to sleep, then got the hook out.

When a barb passes through a tendon, you’re headed to the Doc in a box.
Boat drinks, Waitress I need 2 more boat drinks!
Had one pass through a tendon on my left hand while removing a non-keeper largemouth during a bass tournament.
Everytime I would pull back on the hook it would cause my finger to close or curl inward. Felt like fire was imbeded in the knuckle. Managed to get the barb close enough to the skin so I could cut the part of the tendon that was hung. Really.
Finished the tournament but man was that thing sore.

This is the one that went thru the bone/knuckle. Had to be removed in ER - followed by 10 days of Cipro (to avoid fish handlers disease) and 2 weeks of pain meds.
Happened at the grillage.

Always carry a large pair of Kline dykes. They will cut through almost any hook…
