How to Repair or Replace Fuel Gauge

I have a 2001 Seapro 18ft. w/ 115 Yamaha 4-stroke and I am the original owner. All of the gauges have worked fine, except the fuel which stopped working last year. Any advise as to how to trouble shoot the problem or replace would be much appreciated.
Thanks,

Probably just a wiring problem. There will be 2 wires going to the fuel tank. One of them will be the tank ground and the other one for the sending unit. Chances are good that one or both has a corroded connection. If you remove the wire from the sending unit and ground it, your fuel gauge should move. This will test the gauge itself and the wiring to it.

  1. turn key on
  2. test for 12 volts at teh back of the gauge. (purple and black wire) if good go to step 2
  3. back of gauge jump pink wire to black wire gauge should jump to full (if not, bad gauge)
  4. top of sending unit jump pink wire to black wire gauge should jump full (if not, bad wiring)
  5. replace sending unit

Thanks very much gentleman. I’ll give it a go.

What is wrong if the gauge reads full all the time?

If it still reads full even when the power is off, then the gauge is broken. Otherwise probably the sending unit.
