how to set up my new reef anchor

I just bought a new reef anchor with a break away system and I have a few questions about it. How much chain should I use? What size and how many zip ties do I use? Where do you secure the zip ties at, top or upper shaft?

Use at least 10’ of chain for the reefs around charleston.
I secure the chain to the bottom or grapple part of my anchor and then zip-tie the chain to the top of the anchor. be sure to leave a little slack in the chain between the top and bottom. I will usually leave about 3 links of slack.
Use just enough zip-ties to hold the boat. Too many ties or too large of a tie will make it hard to loose the anchor when you get ready to leave.

Leif you are talking aout a “mighty mite” type anchor…Another thing that we have found helpful is to keep a short length of pipe in the boat to bend the tines back down versus trying tose your hand…slp it over the end of straightenedne and pull back…we keep ours wrapped in a old towel with the anchor…

Penny, Now that’s a “pro-tip”!

Thanks for the tips, I just lost mine yesterday at the 60. Tried every means to break it free but no luck had to cut the line. Had 5 ft of chain but not zip tied.

I have a 24 bay boat, I use 4 zip ties…if the seas are rough, 4 wont hold the boat in place. Tie them to the chain at the end of the anchor shaft, should be able to see it in the pic. I use 3 ft chain on mine

I just use 1zip tie. ??? Never had a problem. It works for me I guess.

Being superstitious is bad luck.

We also keep anchor puller…no…something besides me…lol…you know…one of the orange float retrieval systems and they work great.
