My two goals this summer are to catch a redfish on a top water lure and throw my 8 foot cast net off of boat with a full opening on the first throw. It is very humbling when your wife and kid wants to go on the boat just to watch or laugh at daddy trying to catch bait with cast net.
I’ve got the first goal but the second goal is still alluding me.
How did you guys learn to throw a cast net? Is there a good video or book with a good how to.
A search of Google will privide a list of video’s. View a few and pick one you like. Worked for me, Calusa cast nets video is a good one. The Search I used is - How to throw a cast net video
calusa method is best if you are throwingbig nets. It took me a few tries to master it but now I can pancake my 12ft net about every cast. If you still need some help I would be glad to show you.
I don’t know why everyone thinks you have to throw a 8 plus foot net around here. I have a 7 footer and throw a 6 often and have never had an issue catching bait. It is better to have a 6 footer that will open all the way v. an eight footer that you taco half the time.
To catch menhaden a larger hevier net with large mesh works much better especially in deeper water, you usually only have to throw one time. I used to throw a 12 foot west coast net but it’s heavy and my back can’t take it anymore and I just replaced it with a Betts 10’ super pro last week. If anyone wants the 12’ net in very good condition I will sell it for 50.00 and throw in a lesson if needed. I use a throwing method a neighbor from mississippi taught me that makes throwing any size net easy. I don’t know what its called and have never seen anyone else throw that way but it works.
