Hull Cleaner

I am starting to get a slightly brown haze on the bottom of my boat. What is the best cleaner to get this off of my boat? I wash my boat with soap and water after every trip but the brown haze is still on the water line of the boat.

You nailed it! Hull cleaner is what you seek.

I have a sea hunt also and I know of the brown color you mention.
Go to Walmart and buy a bottle of “Hull Cleaner” wipe on and rinse. boat will be bright white again

Acetone will do the trick nicely.

on off works good for me. be careful using it however.

“The amount of money I’ll be makin would hurt your parents feelings. Remember the class where I taught you all how to make it rain? That’s what I’ll be doin every night, dollar…dollar…bills y’all.”

I have always used on/off but that stuff is potent. be careful using it. Never tried acetone. may be a safer route.

“Plan like you will live forever but live like you will die tomorrow.”

Acetone is VERY agressive on fiberglass and can pull the good oils out of it over time causing it to get chalky prematurly and can soften it IF left in contact with it long enough. That said tho, nothing wrong with using acetone to get off a real stubborn stain off now and then, it does clean fiberglass great. It will strip off any wax as well, so one would ideally wax the area after wiping it down with acetone. The “Hull Cleaner” made by Starbrite Smiley mentioned works pretty good and isn’t as agressive or caustic. If you have to go the acetone or on/off route, be sure to wear rubber gloves as acetone will open up your pores on your hands and “wash” whatever is on your hands and the acetone into your bloodstream and then will take up residence in your liver for the rest of your life!!! I’ve never used on/off before on anything untill just recently had to clean my oven with it and that stuff sure is potent and nasty as all as F&G mentioned.

Ask your local retailer for this stuff called propwash. It does a great job.

Nothing but a “SMART-ELLIC”!

i agree on the walmart hull cleaner. i bought a bottle for under $10. i wiped it on and watched the stains dissappear. it works really well. just rinse off. also; would not hurt to wear a pair of nitrile gloves just for safety reasons.

Rust Aid from Lowes - $10 gallon - spray it on and wash it off.

You gotta love the South Carolina Lowcountry.

As much as I hate the mart, the hull cleaner there does an excellent job. It is an Attwood label that I was told is a product from the same company that makes Starbrite products.

I’ve never use the Wal-Mart hull cleaner before, it sounds good though. I have had some tough stains that I scrubbed and scrubbed with just about everything, with no luck. I use Barkeepers Friend with hardly no elbow grease at all, and it gets the stains off. If you do wax your boat, you will need to rewax after, but it will get the area clean…

God is GOOD!! ALL the time!!</font id=“blue”>

Star brite makes some good hull cleaner but wear gloves because if you have any cuts, it gets in them and ssssstttttiiiiinnnnggggssss.

Starbrite hull cleaner will do the trick. I think it is ocxylick(sp)acid that does the work for you. It also will get rust stains off around hardware. Just be sure NOT to get it in a small cut or in your eyes. Rinse well and whala, it’s clean!!

Lynn, I too have used BKF, I assure you, there is a huge difference in the Hull Cleaner and th BKF. Imagine NO elbow grease and no scuffs whatsoever in the finish of your boat. BKF will leave scuff marks even suttle as they are. Come by and I will give demonstration. I clean boat on Sundays, fish all other days if possible:smiley:

Put the cleaner (on/off) in a spray bottle and spray it on, works way faster than using your hands. Be careful not to breathe in the fumes when crouching under the hull.

Dark Star

Acetone is definitely pretty harsh and will absolutely take the wax off (along with anything else, including glue, silicone, stickers, rub marks from water hoses, shoe shuffs, etc.), but I think most stain removers will prolly remove the wax also, and Acetone is used by fiberglassers to clean and prep gelcoat and expoxy surfaces when they don’t have denatured alcohol handy. It has worked fine for me numerous times in the past. I wouldn’t let a pool of it sit on the floor or anything, but putting it on a rag and wiping off a stain won’t hurt the finish. It will remove the stain, though. I’ve used it on super-shiny Fountains a lot in the past with no problem. It got some stains out that nothing else would before. The boats remained shiny and it takes the stain off very well. It never bothers my skin for some reason. It just makes my hands feel really cold from the evaporation. DEFINITELY keep it away from plastics, vinyls, polycarbonates, and fake leathers.

Lee, good to see ya spending more time in boating and fishing forums - need to up your fishing reports, tho.

Thanks. I haven’t been fishing since I got sick with double pneumonia, kidney failure, and sepsis, and spent 6 days in ICU and 3 more in the recovery wards at the hospital earlier this summer. Doc said it would take 2 full months to recover, and it has taken every bit of it. My last fishing report was posted about 2 or 3 days before I got sick. Caught 40 stripers the Monday before I got sick and reported it in the Inshore Reports. I’ve posted a few more reports this year, but because of my illness, I have barely fished this summer. I hope to be back on the water ASAP, but I haven’t felt up to being in the hot sun all day until just recently, as I was feeling weak and still have lingering asthma from the incident. It’s hard to post fighing reports when you’re not fishing. Thanks, though. Take care.
