Hey everyone…New to the Charleston Area all the way from the west coast and really wanting to deer hunt this year. Anyone know where I might be able to go? Never have hunted whitetail and would absolute to get one with my bow this year. Not sure about hunting club lands or leases out here and I aint rich but would love to draw back on one this year. Any ideas?
West coast to Charleston must be a real culture shock
There are several good WMAs around for public hunting.
Capt. Larry Teuton
Swamp Worshiper
YEs it was a shock, but so far over the last year…all for the better. Didn’t really know what Southern Hospitality was until I came out here. Wouldn’t go back if you paid me! WMA’s Im all about doing as well…pretty much all a real person can afford out west. Not looking for anyone’s “honey hole” but any advice of an area(s) to start looking/scoutin?? Don’t wanna be the one guy walking around where a deer hasn’t ever walked! haha. Thanks again
no worries about the no deer- they walk around in downtown Charleston- the biggest problem you may have is learning to hunt the overgrown flatlands. The Francis Marion nation forest is loaded with deer and plenty of hog- it’s a 250,000 acre hunting club for $50 per year- get a good lightweight climbing stand and a drag harness. Don’t plan on trophy hunting- just plain old deer hunting for legal deer. The average doe killed there probably weighs 80-90 pounds and the average buck less than 125
plain ol’ deer hunting is fine by me…only used to hunting mule deer so I guess ill have to learn the ways of the whitetail so any advice is greatly appreciated!
Hey where do I buy a lease for Francis Marion WMA??
Pretty sure Dockman was referring to the WMA permit that you have to have in addition to your hunting license and big game permit. It’s $30 IIRC
Here’s almost all you want to know.
Probably want to pay attention to area 6 on this page:

Wadmalaw native
16’ Bentz-Craft Flats Boat
You may want to use this link the other is a little out dated and this one is interactive. http://dnr.sc.gov/hunting/zones/index.html

Zone 3 PRIVATE LAND season opens AUG 15th.
Zone 3 PUBLIC LAND ( WMA ) does not open until Sept 15th.
Deer rut here from last week of Sept till mid Jan…
WMA permit is what is needed- just buy a resident sportsman license for $50- it covers all hunting and fishing statewide EXCEPT for saltwater fishing- that is an extra $10- while you are getting your license get the free HIP permit for shooting migratory birds and sign up for the free turkey tags- they will be issued in the spring- and duck tags are also extra cost.
the rut peaks around Halloween but there will be breeding activity from mid Sept until the end of the season on Jan 1- the long rut period also makes the hunting harder.
ok, gotcha! Thanks to you all for all the help. Im hoping Ill make a few buddies at work that aren’t glued to the video games that might be into hunting. So far, no luck but you guys have really helped me out so thank you again. I will definitely probably be asking more! good luck to all huntin’ and fishin’
relax harv don’t try so hard. you got this.
