Hunting Is. Lagoon

Has anyone paddled out there recently? Been thinking about hitting up the lagoon and was wondering if anyone been doing good down there or in that area. Let me know what’s up.

Keep your lines wet.

Caught a few trout on DOA shrimp two weeks ago. Not much to report.

Last few times have not been very productive at HI. Last month the GKF group was here and not much activity for anyone.

Think part of the problem is a result of a certain ethnic group that uses cast nets all over the Lagoon and then they keep everything. Just too much presure for too small an area.

What is chiefly needed is skill rather than machinery.

That certain ethic group does not cast there nets anywhere the fish are. These guys feed there friends and familys off the mullet and clams they gather.

ps there is anough h2o for everybody, it is where you target

I beg to differ, I have seen them cast their nets at Hunting Island Lagoon less than 10’ from a kayak angler working a flat that was always productive for flounder, seatrout and reds… Additionally, at the end, where they cast net most, is where the spot and seatrout bite is often the best. I have also seen these castnetters keep juvenile Black Drum, Redfish, Seatrout, Flounder and other species. The only thing I haven’t seen them keep is a stingray… Which ironically is good eating.

S1tPilot is correct, they have over fished the Lagoon with their nets. In addition to removing the juvenile fish as I have stated, they have also removed the bait fish that attracts fish there in the first place.

Finally, the areas they do not fish with their nets, are also seeing too much pressure from bank and kayak fishermen. When I moved here 5 years ago, I never saw a kayaker fishing the lagoon. Now, I see them almost every time.

Hunting Island Lagoon is being overfished and loved to death.

Those who can’t fish, spend too much on seafood!
