Hunting issues with hippie neighbor

Just make sure your son is shooting away from his house and let him shoot. If he is the one with the 243 that is a nice gun. My daughter shoots a single shot 243. Forget which bullets she shoots but on a vital shot entrance was small round hole with an exit that looked like I took a knife and sliced it open and pulled out half the lung. Only ran about 50 yards. Looks like you have a good place to introduce him with out being in danger from other people. I would love to have a place like that. Are you anywhere near Shell house road?

I am about a mile from shell house. My son has a rem 700 .243 that he is anxious to shoot a deer with. I have never shot a deer with a 243 but I hear they can do a good job. It’s great for him because with the light recoil, he does not flinch like with my bigger calibers.

It was kinda funny tonight. The kids wanted a fire so I put some fallen branches and moss in the fire pit. I was a little liberal with the gas and when I lit it, it exploded pretty good. 5 mins later Mr. Nosy came driving down the road wanting to know who was shooting. I honestly could not believe this guy. Now that I know he is listening for gunfire, I will get my son a huge box of firecrackers and a lighter. :imp:

He was obviously intoxicated and was drinking while driving in his car. His newest thingis he insists no one is allowed to discharge a firearm within 300 yards of another house. I really dislike this guy but I find myself just politely nodding when I hear this crap just to keep peace.

I have made the decision to just let him call the cops if that is what he thinks he needs to do. All I have to say is karma is a *****.

Hey Easy, are there any left? I can’t think of the last phone booth I’ve seen. Dam cell phones are taking over.

You might be right Fred! Might have to buy one of the $10 throwaway phones from Walmart for that call:wink:

DNR would rather talk to you before an incident, not after one. Assuming you have nothing to hide, invite a local officer to stop by and discuss the property lines, stand proximity, and shooting direction(s). He?ll give you all the information you need to make an educated decision and his contact info if there is an issue. Even if you are renting, if the home owner has given you permission to hunt (get it in writing), you?ll be fine with whatever is legal (rifles included).

We hunt a small parcel outside of Charleston but out of respect to neighbors do not AM hunt on Sundays even though it is legal?sometimes just being courteous will go a long way.

If he still causes problems maybe he needs to know how bad it can be (ever hear someone target shooting - clear a clip over and over and over again, day after day…if you know what I mean).

If he calls DNR, it will probably be the same officer responding every time he calls. The first time the officer realizes that the guy is wasting his time, he will tell hippie neighbor to quit wasting his time. I’ve seen this before, and I’ve never met a DNR officer who didn’t have some common sense. I wouldn’t worry about your neighbor, and just keep doing what you’re doing.

MattR: you sound like a very reasonable, responsible citizen. My advice is easy: you should follow the law to the letter, absolutely. As a father like you, get your son out with that .243 right away. Get him hunting with you and you two will have a common bond for life. Let hippie boy call the law, drink and drive, act stupid etc. You are in the legal right and the DNR officer will read the situation very easily, quickly, and see you for who you are and what you are doing is within the law. Never go nuclear, lose your temper and clearly state the facts. Hippie will show how wrong he is for all to see. Suggest the meeting occur at his property.

Lastly, POST THOSE PICS OF THAT PROUD YOUNG MAN WITH HIS TROPHY, DOE OR BUCK!!! You will have a hunting buddy for life.

Lets see a pic of you guys with your sons first deer. Tell the neighbor to pack sand.

Mattr my daughter has killed 2 does, 1 cow horn and a 4 point with the 243. The cow horn and 4 point were out between 50 - 70 yards and a well placed shot rolled them over. One from a ground blind and the other from a 2 person tree stand. Is your son under 17? If so you can sign him up for draw hunts with the DNR and the Forest Services. The forest guys hunt at Tibwin Plantation in Awendaw and it is a 2 day hunt where they can shoot up to 2 deer a day. These are youth hunts in the back of the rules and regs book.

You people are much more civilized than me. I would tell him if he came on my property again I would consider it a threat and he would not like the next gun shot he heard
