Hunting issues with hippie neighbor

The guy that lives up the road from me stopped my son and asked if I was shooting any deer. My son told him about the buck I got earlier in the season. He told my son to tell me if I shoot any more deer he is calling DNR on me.

As soon as I got the news from my son, I got in the golf cart and headed over. He told me that I cannot shoot a deer within 300 yards of his house. I informed him that by google earth he was 1100-1200 feet away as the crow flies. He went on about how he called the state and they said it was not an exact measurement and if he felt his life was in danger he could call. I got a bow to try and keep the peace but he said arrows can fly that far too.

The root of all of this is he has the deer eating out of a kiddie pool right beside his deck. He blasts his grateful dead smoking pot watching the deer. He gets disability…one of those guys.

Should I just make sure I dot my i’s and cross my t’s about everything else and let him call dnr or do you guys think he has a legitimate complaint? I got a little pic from my phone here. The red circle is his house. Red arrow is general direction I shoot my bow. Blue ok’s I have permission.

I thought about that :imp:

One evening I was walking through the woods back from fishing in a pond. I saw him before he saw me and he chucked something into a palmetto tree as I walked to him. I think he has a stash growing in the woods.

What really pisses me off is I taught him how to throw a cast net and gave him good shrimping numbers. I really don’t want any trouble. I have had bad neighbors before and its not good for either party. I really think I will just use the bow and he can piss off. My son really wants to blast one with his 243 but since he’s always home, he will hear the gunshot and call.

youre doing nothing illegal and not anywhere near his property by the looks of the cell phone map. assuming thats where you are and you have your license, big game permit, doe tags, permission, … hunt anyways. whats dnr really gonna do…write you a ticket for not breaking the law?

Having a feud with a neighbor is no good for anybody. I would either go smoke the peace pipe with him or after your next kill, bring him a bunch of jerky, deer chili (or whatever you make) and see if that helps.
If he’s still an a-hole, set up a tree stand right outside his property since the kiddie pool feeder sounds like a great place to spot.

Ditto!! What are the numbers for the kiddie pool?

Matt if the distance is over 300 yds he can call. but it wont do him a bit of good.
I had a nieghbor pull the same crap on us around 2000 I think the rule was only a couple years old at the time.
I was ready to kick his u know what.

A few years later he had his nephew trying to make peace over the matter, after he lost his
hunting property. Karma will come round one day.
By the way if you own the land u can hunt it regardles of the 300yds.

If it were me, I would call DNR and ask to talk to the local DNR officer in the area, when he/she has a chance to stop by. Let the dispatcher know what is going on and that you want to talk face-to-face to the officer. When he comes by, explain to him just where you are hunting, what you are using, and what the neighbor has said. There is a good chance he will give you some pointers, tell you exactly where the ‘line’ is. Get him on your side, heck he already is, his job it to help you hunt, not stop you from hunting, that would put him out of a job.
Then put this sign in your yard…

Theres nothing like the "Smell" and sounds of the creek. Its not just one thing that makes it familiar..its all of it.

The sign might not work… He said his hippie pot smoking neighbor is against shooting deer, not against owning guns… He may even own guns himself… A pothead with guns!! GREAT!!!

Great sign Joseph69! Only trouble is he may have guns, but doesn’t hunt. I have a neighbor like that. He has guns but likes to feed the deer.

Good advice on getting DNR’s advice, but I sat hunt on my friend. Only issue I see is that if you do hit one with the bow, they tend to run - if he ends up on Jerry Garcia’s land you’ll never retrieve the animal. Let your boy shoot one with the gun, I would.

Might not work, but I support this opinion. This guy is your neighbor and its best to try to make the peace rather than an enemy, especially in a small community like Edisto Island.

If it doesn’t work, maybe you can say that if he doesn’t call DNR on you you won’t call the cops about his crop of pot. His reaction will tell you if you got it right

Your neighbor sounds like me and my wife. She has stated our property is deer sanctuary. I never had a problem with it and set up feeders and camera’s for her, I did not like it but it keeps peace in the family. Until she finally realized that deer are a pain in the ass.

This year they ate all her pumpkins, four plantings of beans and field peas + mowed down some blue berry and ornamental shrubs down. The wife has finally come around and realized that deer are no more than wild goats that will destroy a garden even with electric fence. I am now able to shoot deer around the house if I desire to do so.

If your neighbor has a weed stash, he’ll learn to protect it well from deer. They love to eat the stuff along with rabbits.

On the 300 yard thing, Joseph69 had a great idea. Get the truth straight from the horses mouth. Call DNR and request a meeting with an officer. If it is in your favor, politely ask your neighbor if he would enjoy a pack of venison burger.

Is it your land? If so, tell him if he doesn’t like it he can move, this is the law: It is unlawful to hunt deer within 300 yards of a residence without permission of the owner and occupant, except that a landowner may hunt on his own land (50-11-355).

See, this is the pickle. I rent the house right now with an option to buy. I read that law and if I owned this house, it would not matter what he thinks.

On a side note, I had a few beers with the guy that owns the land that backs up to the hippies property. He said he would shoot them and give them to me if its such a big deal. The deer are eating all his shrubs and tore up some other plants.

It seems like every other day there is a deer smashed on the road. It makes me sick because its going to buzzard food instead of delicious meat snacks or steaks. They are almost like pets. Look at this pic from tonight. They were coming in and laying down. I would have to hit one with a rock to get it to stand up to be a little sporting.

All flattops tonight. I have a real nice 9 pointer on the game cam but have not seen him in person yet.

Agreed with the above. Just hunt.

I also agree that you should do what you can to remain peaceable about it. Seriously, take the guy a pound of good jerky. He may balk at it, not your fault. Dust off your feet if he does and move on, keep hunting.

I would preemptively call the DNR and ask if an officer would be able to visit. Stay on their good side if you think your neighbor is actually going to call. They know that if you were doing anything illegal, you wouldn’t be calling them first. Also tell them your suspicion that he has a little extracurricular botany going on, and give them specific reasons why you think this.

“Sire, it belongs in truth to the Church of God, in whose name I speak, to endure blows and not to inflict them. But it will also please your Majesty to remember that she is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.”…Theodore Beza

If all the above fails, remember that Meth Lab of his:wink::smiley: Call from a phone booth so it can’t be traced back to you:imp:

What your neighbor is doing is the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard. Its a deer. We eat them. They are food just like a cow or a carrot. You have to kill food in order to eat it. Why is this hard to understand? Why would he be ok with killing shrimp to eat them but not a deer? Makes no sense. Yea, you need to take him some and let him see how delicious they are.

Maybe he is afraid his grow might get found:question: Hunters find a lot of those things.

Just make sure your son is shooting away from his house and let him shoot. If he is the one with the 243 that is a nice gun. My daughter shoots a single shot 243. Forget which bullets she shoots but on a vital shot entrance was small round hole with an exit that looked like I took a knife and sliced it open and pulled out half the lung. Only ran about 50 yards. Looks like you have a good place to introduce him with out being in danger from other people. I would love to have a place like that. Are you anywhere near Shell house road?
