huntington, murrels inlet, flounder?

When you leave Huntington State Park, turn right (north) on Hwy 17.

Oyster Landing is less than a mile north of the park. It’s down a little dirt road on the right side of Hwy 17, with a sign that reads “Oyster Recycling Station.” This is the easiest landing, with water on almost any tide. The parking area may rarely flood a few inches, but only on extremely high tides. There’s a cut at the north end of the landing that takes you out to Oaks Creek, one of the main MI creeks. Going left (north) on Oaks will eventually take you to the jetties. Going right (south) on Oaks will take you to the causeway at Huntington.

To get to Morse Landing at Hot Fish Club, continue up Hwy 17 about another 1/4 mile past this dirt road. Business 17 will fork off to the right, taking you to the Murrells Inlet restaurants. Morse Landing/Hot Fish Club will be about a mile on this road, on your right. Be careful of this landing at low tide. You can get stranded, waiting on water.

If you’re looking for some good seafood, Russell’s is across the street from Hot Fish Club. Don’t know about crab legs, but their fried flounder and shrimp are freshest around.

Have a good trip. Hope to catch y’all in the Spring.

Had a good time exploring but the fishing wasn’t what I hoped. There was plenty of bait at landing, even at high tide. Only one well placed cast and I loaded up on fingers.
Fished on top of the oyster beds the first afternoon, giving up on tying leaders on, after breaking off many times. Nothing landed. I went back the next morning and found a decent spot in channel, landing 2 flounder, one at 20" and one around 8".
Tried the afternoon again with a skunk. The place really looked fishy, jsut wans’t my day.
Took the credit card up to BassProshope:smiley: and bought some necessities, I love that place. They got 2 nice o/size spottails in the tank.
We’ll get em’ in the Spring.

Thanks for the report, and I hate I missed ya’. Looks like it’s going to be late this week before I get back home. MI is a good fishery but IMO it’s overfished to the point that hurts it. Glad you found at least one decent spot. Did you check out both landings? Let me know when you head back up, I’m looking forward to it.

Did you leave an “X” on the flounder spot so I can find it?

My in-laws have a house at N. Litchfield and I want to get a Kayak for these same waters.

What should I look for?

Thank you,
JR

Hey JR -

Lots of good fishing kayaks out there. I use a Hobie Outback and love it. The pedal mechanism leaves both hands free for fishing. http://www.hobiecat.com/kayaking/models_outback.html
Most folks prefer a sit-on-top for fishing, since it gives you easy access to storage space for tackle boxes, rod mounts, etc. I suspect your question got buried in this old thread. Post a new thread asking for suggestions, and you should get a bunch.

If you’re up in Myrtle Beach, stop by Sail and Ski Connection and talk to Norris. Great folks up there. There’s also a new sporting goods consignment in Pawleys Island, directly across Hwy 17 from La Playa. I saw some kayaks sitting out front. Black River Outfitters in Georgetown was advertising a sale on used kayaks. They are usually this year’s demos or rentals, and can really be a good deal. Don’t worry about the scuffs and scrapes on the bottom. One or two trips over the oyster beds in MI will leave a brand new boat looking like that. Whatever you look at, try to work out a test drive or day’s rental. It’s worth experimenting.

Thanks OC.
I am coming down this weekend and I will check out Black River and the Shop in Pawleys.
