I’m a new boat owner and thinking about this recent report of Hurricane Irene coming this Saturday at 8am. Is there already a topic or discussion about what to do with your boat?
I’m docked in the water with a cc on a creek off the lower Ashley.
identify what your options are (ie trailering the boat, leave at the dock but batten her down) then give it another day or 2 and watch the forecast…

I will be taking mine out of the water…main thing so it hopefully won’t tear the dock up, pilings are a little more of a pain to replace

I’d pull it if you can. Even Tropical Storm winds can cause significant damage. They’re predicting Irene to pick up force and be a significant hurricane when/if it makes US landfall. Even if you do a great job securing your boat, the folks around you may not be as prepared and could cause damage to your well-prepared boat. Mine is typically on a lift and that’s still concerning since storm surge at high tide could put it back in the water. Fortunately, it’s on the trailer at the shop for repairs. Never thought I’d say that!
Read your insurance policy on what is or isn’t covered in the event of a named storm. If its trailerable then chances are you pull it and haul it or you pay for it.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Thanks!, I’ve been pleased with even the amount of reads it is getting. At some point everyone will have to make a go/no-go decision with their boat based on NOAA’s model. I’m hanging for a couple of more days but would like to hear what everyone else is doing.

Lighten up man, a little levity never hurt anybody. Being a natural born smartass just couldn’t resist.

I leave mine on the trailer and hope for the best. I would hope that boat insurance would cover damages if they happen

Most insurance policies cover windstorm damage, but if you have a GEICO/Ski Safe policy, you might have a problem later this week because they’ve been selling X-wind policies in the lowcountry for years. Putting the boat in your garage won’t cause your homeowner’s to cover it, either (but it will help protect it).
On what to do with the boat, Salty gave you good advice. Read your policy because they are all different. In general, you are required to just “reasonable” measures. Some policies specify more detail, particularly those that require a hurricane plan, but those are typically for larger boats and yachts. If you can put it in your garage, I would do that if it were me. That’s where my small boats will be. If you have a yacht, try to have it hauled if you can. Some policies may require that you move the boat. If you can’t do any of that, batten it down as well as you can. Whatever you do, don’t let the boat become more important than getting your family to safety FIRST.
If I can read any specific policy jackets for anyone and answer any questions, I’ll be glad to. Just give me a shout.
Let’s hope this thing misses us.
