hurricane yaks?

Hoping to get my first yak in the not-too-distant future and was wondering if any of you knowledgeable folk have paddled Hurricane yaks, especially the Phoenix line of SOTs. They don’t seem to be as popular as the Native or WS brands.

I’m intrigued by their weight. Being a fairly little guy (5’6, 135), the idea of hauling around a 60+ pound yak is not so inviting. The Phoenix 12-footer is under 40 pounds. The 13 is 46. They’re made from a different kind of material, called Trylon. Supposed to be as tough as poly, but I’d be curious to hear some reports. Wondering how stable they are, too. They sure look purty.

Also, besides weight, are there other considerations for someone my size with a yak? I’m wondering if a bigger yak would ride too high and get blown around more or something.

Thanks for the help. This forum has been a great source of info.

Never heard of them so I can’t really help ya but welcome to the site anyway!

He took the jugbelly clouser like an anemic sea trout on crack…

Interesting boats. They’re thermoformed instead of rotomolded. So a large sheet of plastic is heated and vaccumed into a mold to create the hull, another pice forms the deck. The down side is that the two piece have to be joined together. Joints can leak.

On the plus side, i really like the shape of some of their yaks. The Phoenix line looks like they should have fantastic glide. I’d opt for the 140 becuase of the Greenland type bow, but that’s just me:wink:

Maybe they’ll show up at the kayak expo next week.
