Hushpuppy recipe?

Anybody have a good recipe? Looking for something on the sweet side, not too spicy. I love hot and spice but the family doesn’t.

A basic recipe that I’ve used for years. Can easily be modified to suit your taste.

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1/2 cup water (more or less to get correct consistency)

To this recipe , I will add 1 or 2 tablespoons of sugar depending on how sweet I want it. Also, I will add some finely chopped onion or fresh jalapeno pepper. For spicy, I add a teaspoon of some kind of red pepper (cayenne or ground red pepper). I will add the water in parts to get a thick consistency because I don’t want it to be too thin like a batter. When you fry them, don’t let the oil get over 325-350 and don’t make them too big because they will be brown on the outside and not cooked on the inside.

above recipe but drop the water and ad a can of creamed corn and some finely chopped onion.

Take some of the mixture and add some chopped jalapenos for some spicy ones on the side.

Try this if you like them sweet.
2 cups store bought hushpuppy mix.
2 cups self rising flour.
1 cup of sugar.
I also chop 1 onion.
slowly mix with cold water.
let it sit and it will rise.
believe me,very good.

House Autry hushpuppy mix. Super easy & makes great tasting hush puppies. Add onions, etc. if you want to.

had an old man give me this extremely easy recipe.

get your favorite salsa, put it in a strainer to get the majority of the water out. Mix whats left with house autry and a little salt and pepper and give em to the fryer! very very easy, don’t need a lot of ingredients, and man is it good!!

That’s a great use for salsa. Whenever I find salsa in the fridge that looks and smells good but has been there for a while, I throw it into a pot of beans. I’ll try it in hushpuppies next time.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
