Just got a 14’ McKee with a 30hp evinrude tiller. would a hydrofoil make enough of a difference to bother with? thanks in advance

What are you trying to accomplish? Is it porpoising, blowing out in turns, won’t trim, etc? I had a 16 McKee I have done a lot of messing with to get mine to trim correctly and not porpoise. Hydrofoils tend to be a waste and are just a bandaid for a correctly installed motor and correct prop.
If you could, let me know what the boat is doing, take a pic of the foot with the motor trimmed down showing where the ventilation plate is in relationship to the bottom of the boat, and what prop you are running.

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>I have only had positive results with hydrofoils (the types mounted on the motors). Used then on motors from 15HP to 115 HP.
Hydrofoils can work, but they are dependent on the trim of the outboard. What might be the optimal trim for the hydrofoil is usually not the best for the outboard. Overall they sacrifice speed as the create lift (equals drag). I have had extremely good sucsess with using smart tabs on small boats.

Great for tiller steering boats where most of the weight is in the back. Helps boat glide to a stop off of plane instead of sudden drop with water coming over transom. Also gets up on plane quicker and at slower speeds.

after its first outing with me, the motor did relatively well with me, the three kids and some gear. it seemed to take little while to get up to plane, but once it got up, I could throttle back a little and it would stay up.I don’t know enough about boats to mske a call ads to whether it would need a different prop (not feasible yet with the holidays coming) a hydrofoil, etc. However, it still functions and for now that will have to suffice. It did seem to porpoise a bit when my oldest and I were in the back with the two littler ones in the front. thanks for your input, I am sure there will plenty more questions forthcoming

as mentioned above you still have to work with your trim, but I have one on my 60HP and it has helped getting on plane, cavitation issues and porpoising…wouldn’t trade mine for the world…

if you are trying to get on plane faster with an under powered boat (a 14 mckee with a 30 is underpowered), a hydrofoil will help improve that.
if the motor is properly mounted, a fin should not decrease top end. when the boat is at WOT, the fin should be at teh surface of the water.
without getting off the couch right now and looking(Steelers about to be on) any ideas about options for props I should look for.
