I Blew Up My F25 (CRAP)

The other day, I screwed in the water hose when I cranked the boat. She pissed quite nicely.

Today, we drained the tank and lines. Added fresh gas.

Backstory – engine is a 2000 model Yamaha F25. I got it in 2010 and it never ran quite right. I mean, it ran well, but always seemed lagging and sometimes wouldn’t get on plane well, nor would throttle response be very good.

Like I said, I’ve had the boat for 3 years. I’ve run it about 5 times; I’ve loaned the boat about about 5 times, too. So…3 years, not run, much.

I used the Yamaha water hook-up and ran the boat in the yard a few nights ago, it worked just fine. Then, fast forward to today:

I put the boat in the water, did a big loop in the cove, and noticed the engine wasn’t pissing. I noticed this initially, but thought that it may start…

Anyway, after the big loop solo, I pulled up to the dock and was sitting on an oil slick.

Seemed the oil was coming mostly from the exhaust hole. I got to paddle my boat onto the trailer; that was fun.

I reckon I need a new impeller. Not too sure what’s caused the oil blow, but I’m NOT too happy about the day.

The “Yamaha water hook up” is only for flushing the engine with it NOT running. :frowning:

You can have motor cranked up while hooked to the flush hose as long as you keep it at idle and don’t rev it up…

Water pump pulls water up from lower and through the upper. Water hose hook up pushes water from the upper through the lower. by using a water hose hook up you’re pushing water through the water pump that is spinning the opposite way. Can’t be good for a water pump at any speed.

If you ain’t hooked, you ain’t doing it right.

I’ve run mine with the top water hose and the ear muffs on at the same time. I used a hose splitter. You can’t run it at all without the ear muffs on, because you’ll burn up the impeller real quick without water. Was the prop still spinning and would it go into reverse and forward?

The boat drove the whole time. I looked back a few times to see if it was pissing…it wasn’t, so I pulled back to the dock. When I got docked, I looked back and saw the oil slick.

I didn’t crank it back up.

Going to replace the impeller as soon as I can and then try to see why the engine is spewing oil. It’s odd, because the only oil seems to be coming out of the muffler. Not a drop of blown oil inside the cowl.

Might just be a valve stem seal?

Look at part# 7 on the exploded view!
Pull the plugs and see if they are oil covered!

If you hook it to the hose through the washdown connector it will piss even when its not running. For future reference, hook it to a set of muffs in the yard, that allows you to test the water pump. As for the oil, pull the dipstick and see what the oil looks like. If its milky then you done blowed it. If not you’re probably ok, you just need to find where the leak is coming from.

Thanks.

I FWD’d this to my buddy who’s gonna be taking a look at it when he gets a chance.

Regards “hot” flushing the engine: Yamaha engineer specifically told me it was permissible to run the engine at idle with only the hose flush.

Silver, water pump is easy to replace and cost about $65 and can be done 2 hrs. I don’t use the water hose connector because my 250 will overheat if using it even at idle. Bottom muffs only

Thanks!

I know it’s an easy task. Took about 45 minutes for us when we did it last; I’m pretty sure this should take about 20 minutes as long as we don’t spend too much time in the sauce.

Impeller was fried. I mean…like “no fins” fried. It was a perfect circle with all the pieces sitting in the cup.

The boat ran fine with no oil coming from anywhere once we fired it back up. It still runs sluggish, which it always had. A carb is gonna be installed soon along with new plugs. Should work like a new boat. Gonna keep my fingers crossed.

Thanks for the help/advice.

Silver, those big boats feel different from the 17/18 ft ones. I have a OX 250 on my 2486 Triton and it has always felt sluggish and it’s fuel injected. When I pop the 250 twin 150’s are going back. Yours is like mine and probably rated for 300 hp.

I was referring to my little F25 with all the problems. The picture above was in reference to changing impellers.

The Wellcraft could use a bit more but it has always felt very responsive. It is EFI, of course.
