I brought this over from the discussion section

I know this has been talked about a few times but less do it one more time - Down Riggers. I have 2 Penn 625s with the 48" booms on swivel rod holder mounts.

It is time to change the SS cable on the down riggers and was thinking about putting 200 pound PowerPro on one of them.

The questions that I have is:

  1. can you put a Z-wing on PowerPro?
  2. what is the heaviest ball you can pull with PowerPro?
  3. If I usually do not troll over 6 to 7 knots, does the above 2 questions really come into play?

Last question, if you have changed to PowerPro, what do you like better, SS cable or PowerPro?

cable would be better

Stick with the cable. The only you should consider switching over to fluorocarbon or power pro is for tourney kingfishing. Fish gets tangled in downrigger…easier to cut.

Use a penn 625 with 200lb braid to pull a triple dredge at 5 knots no problems Works great

I used to use cable on my downrigger but at several different speeds have picked up an audible hum from the cable - I have used 200lb braid on mine since 2004 with both planers and up to a 12lb ball with no problems.

After lossing several z-wing’s, I went with 480lbs cable. So far so good. Tight lines.
