Loaded up this morning and headed out, determined I was going to get my first Red in the kayak today. Got to the ramp, netted up a nice little batch of finger mullet, a few mud minnows and some shrimp. Then it was off to my spot. They were not there at first. Saw a dolphin swimming around checking things out so I figured there were Reds somewhere. (The dolphin was really pretty cool, it was like he kept popping up and looking around to see what was above the water line and checking me out too.) I didnt see anything so I moved on, tried a couple of other spots and still nothing. Then I started heading back to where I was originally and was just about to start heading home and, BAM!, there was a bunch of them right under my bow! Nice big Reds cruising around in nothing for water. Got the finger mullet out there and hooked up! Boy this fish pulled hard too. He would get to the kayak and blast back out again. I finally got him up in the kayak. I was tickled to have seen them so many times but never land one. Last time I went to this spot I hooked up but lost the fish that was on. The rest of the morning I just spent looking around and checking out all the bait. I had a blast and it was so cool to finally land a Red in the kayak. When I got home I measured where he laid in the boat and it looked to be about a 24" fish. I dont think that was too bad at all for a first Red in the kayak.
Good for you! That first red is special. The first one from a kayak was even more so, not really sure why, but it does feel good.
I have caught Reds before but this was the first one from the kayak. For the last handful of trips, all I have looked for was Reds. It was really cool to finally get one from it.
Congrats! He must’ve fought like the devil… looks like he knocked your shoe right off!
Congrats, I have yet to hook a monster, only smaller guys, I look forward to hooking up with a large one soon
Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

Congrats man looks like a good one! I am still looking to get my first red into my yak.
–It is impossible to have a bad day fishing, because no matter what you still got to be on the water.–
