I slammed into a giant stingray cruising at about 30 mph in the port royal sound. First with the hull and then with the outboard. The ray seemed to be mortally wounded but the boat is alright for the most part. When I returned to the dock, I put the motor in reverse to maneuver around the docks and the motor tilted up causing the prop the come out of the water. It appears that I damaged the hydraulic tilt on my Yamaha F225. The electric tilt still works, and I did,nt see any damage to the motor. I can lift the motor up with my hands without any resistance from the piston. Does anyone have an idea of what may be broken or how to fix it.
That doesn’t sound good!
It was worse for the ray! I’m going to start by checking hydraulic fluid.
It was actually a giant Manta Ray that we hit. Pretty crazy.

Hey Man,
Running in I had a motor bounce off a turtle.
No ill effect on the tilt cylinders even though the unit blew out of the water.
4th trip out after the incident that lower unit let go half way back from Edisto Reef.
Long 10 knot ride in on one motor…
I was concerned about the prop as well but it seems to be fine. I handed the problem off to a mechanic. It looks like seals in the main trim tilt cylinder are blown. Not inexpensive to fix but it could have been a lot worse. thanks for the replys.

I would think this might qualify for an insurance claim?
