…kinda. I was talking to a guy at work the other day about fishing, and how I had a few ponds/lakes that I’d like to fish, but don’t have a small boat to get in there with. Lo and behold, he tells me that he has a kayak that he’ll let me borrow indefinitely (it was collecting dust in his garage).
It’s a Pelican Storm (definitely not designed for fishing) but for a beginner yak, it’ll do just fine. Picked it up on the way home from work yesterday and decided to stop by the lake for a quick paddle. Dropped her in and promptly dumped myself out of it. Water was nice, but not so good when the wallet, keys, and cell phone are still in the pockets. Got it back to the hill, dumped out the water, and hopped in to go again.
Stopped by the Pig this morning and picked up a milk crate, fixed it up with some rod holders, and hit the water for a little fushin’. It’s a brackish lake, so I drug a Gulp shrimp behind me and fished a electric chicken grub on a jig head. Didn’t catch anything, but sure was fun to be out on the water that I previously didn’t have access to (can’t use outboards).
So yeah, now I’m a cool kid like you guys. Need to get some more practice in so I feel comfortable with it, then may hit some creeks. You guys have any suggestions for a newbie?
Where ya at Bro? I am goign to be fishing bushy park only for the next month or so pretty much I’ll let ya know when I am going and help ya out… Try to remember that less is more in a yak… I usually take 5 rods wiht me all rigged differently but that’s if I am planning on a full day of fishing… If I am going out for a couple of hours I’ll bring one bait rod and one lure rod… I have two samll plano boxes one for hooks, leaders and weights and another for soft plastics and the few hard crankbaits I take… other than that the milk crate is for holding my water and camera and very little else… I used to take a boat load fo crap with me “just in case” but I have dumped it in favor of less to drop in and tote around… I do havea net in one of the rod holders and do tote around a minnow bucket some times but a lot less than when I first started… I am going to take the boat to work work later this week, wed or thur ( weather is supposed to be good) and hit the park after work… You are more than welcome to come along… I’ll help ya out and show you a couple of spots…
If your close to the Beaufort area always looking for someone to fish with, just send me an email. The lagoon at HI is always a good place and I fish there all the time.
Jedi been hinking about heading up to Bushy next month, would like to head out fishing with you sometime. Figure this is the year I’m going to try and hit some areas I have not tried before. Been looking on Google Maps to find some areas not to far from home. Catching fish just not many Reds and hope to get into some good redfish.
What is chiefly needed is skill rather than machinery.
You can catch reds at Bushy but Redfishville is the spot for reds out of all the places I know of… It’s been a little slow and really windy at the ville lately, from what I hear, but as soon as it really turns on I’ll give ya a hoot and we’ll plan a day… as for Bushy we can fish there any time… flounder should be truning on here pretty quick and the trout never really leave… reds have been a little scarce but we’ll do our best to find 'em…
