FINALLY, my first reds on the fly. Granted, it was in a pond and blind casting, but hey, we all have to start somewhere! Mad Mike’s Mud Minnow was the fly, and it also caught a 6lb catfish along with these two reds. I will be very happy when I can post a pic of a red that I’ve tracked down and sight-casted to, but in the meantime, these will have to do. (P.S., I know these look the same, but they are definitely two different fish!)
Congrats Paul! Nothing wrong with blind casting…its how I caught my first red and trout on the fly. Gotta start somewhere and knocking off two species on the fly in one day is awesome!
…because everything is a conspiracy!!!
I ditto, nothing wrong with blind casting. When the wind is up, sometimes that is the only way you are going to catch fish. Good job.

Maybe you caught the same fish twice? They even have the same wrinkle on their gill plate. It doesn’t matter anyway. Congrats!

You may be right, but I caught these within about 5 mins of one another and had moved to another part of the pond, so if it’s the same one, he was very mobile, not to mention ravenously hungry!! But I’m sure stranger things have happened!

That “wrinkle” is the preopercle and they all have them.
Congrats on the 1st red OTF!
Super fun catching them on the fly!
Like mentioned by others, sometimes the only way is by blind casting…you never know!
