I suck at cobia

Nick planted the idea in my head of making a quick cobia trip this week and that was all the motivation I needed. We headed out Wednesday morning at 6am and couldn’t find any menhaden (not that we tried too hard) and no jelly balls. We focused on fishing whole large squid and live blue crabs at the charleton 60 and got nothing but plenty of Amberjack. We had one remora eat a bank sinker and when we brought it up to the boat two cobia were with it but they wouldn’t eat anything and were gone very quickly. Despite the whole no cobia thing, it was a good time out on the water before work and the burgers at Page’s Okra Grill helped refuel us. I plan to keep at it since I’m pretty new to cobia fishing and need to put in the time.
Oh and the weather man was pretty far off. We somehow had a head wind of about 20kts both ways with some solid 4 footers mixed in. There is no way in hell that was a 12 second period either.

Phew. Tell me about it. At least you saw a few and no they were there.

hell i didn’t even get to the bay in Georgetown and i could have told you it was not going to be anywhere near flat… we had white caps rolling pre bridges… i grabbed the wheel made a hard left and headed back up river to the house…

glad you got to see them but sux they didn’t commit… put in the time and it will happen.

Carry a spear gun and shoot one, then jump in with them. That’s just as sporting as catching it on a rod. Free gaffing is not a good idea:face_with_head_bandage:

sounds like you speak from experience ^^

go to haddrells and ask for gator hooks- best cobia bait there is

all the ones i caught last year were on jigs with a little piece of cigar minnow site casting when they followed something else up. the small ones will hit cut squid on a single hook.
