4 1/2 years later i think my stereo gave it up. i would like to hear your thoughts on new ones. i have a flats style boat so space is at a premium. my current stereo is mounted on a shelf in the console and i want the new one to be there too. i have a small remote on the dash so there is a hole there for something already. i really dont want to cut much of a bigger hole.
i dont want a cd player, just a 9-pin ipod cord and am/fm
You mount the amp/tuner in the console, or some out of the way place. The controller is on the dash. With the iPod cable, you can keep your iPod safe and have full iPod function on the controller. I’ve added Sirius too. Doesn’t take up much room, and has worked great (knock on wood) for 2+ years.
I’m working on something a little different right now. All I have in the boat is a 3.5mm jack running directly to an amp. The idea being no head unit to replace down the road. Speakers are in as of yesterday and I plan on finishing the project tonight. Hopefully I’ll be able to post results and pictures tomorrow. If it works it will be a really simple setup that could support an ipod, an fm radio, or even a sat. radio really easily.
The am/fm option is definitely the weakness for the 3.5mm jack option. You can certainly find an am/fm walkman or something like that but obviously you won’t get great reception. Of course, if you are staying around Chas/MB or other populated areas reception shouldn’t be a problem for you. All I plan on using is an ipod on mine so it is the perfect option.
Here’s the jack (http://www.marine-electronics-unlimited.com/Poly-Planar+IC-3.5PM+MP3+Adapter.html). I’ll split that with two more Y cables for a 4 channel amp. The jack will be in the side (or bottom, I haven’t decided yet) of my e-box with the amp inside. The amp is powered directly to the battery with the remote switch running to an ACC switch. I went heavy on the speakers/amp cause I didn’t have to spend money on the head unit and got out for just under $300. Spent another $100 or so on wire, etc. and that was it. Now, I haven’t fired it up yet but I’ll let you know tomorrow how it sounds.
