Ice in Charleston

Can anyone tell me the closest ice machine (The ones that dispense 20 pounds bags for 1.50 - 2.00) to the intersection of HWY 17 and the end of HWY 526? There used to be one close on 17 near the Doerochers? grocery store but its closed and completely gone last I saw. Keep in mind I am not a Charleston resident when giving location.

Thanks alot.

Sorry can’t help with what your looking for because I don’t reside in that area. Might I suggest block ice. Not sure if you have a seperate large freezer but it you do, it is the way to go. Get some plastic trays, fill them up with about an inch of water and freeze. Then you can break it up or leave it block. It will last longer and its free (minus the water bill)

Yeah we already do that to some extent, but usually we need about 5 of those 20 lb bags per day for coolers, bait, etc. Try to stay a couple days each trip, so Ice is always a daily purchase. Those machines are just so darn convenient.

Its on 171 in Doug Heaton’s parking lot. Look up Heaton Floor Coverings.

There is one on Hwy 61 right behind sunrise Cafe…Little out of the way but take paul cantrell exit and take first right to stop light take left and its right there on the right after the dollar general…thats the only one i can think in the area you are asking for.

if you put in at Wappoo you can go on over the bridge onto James Island and there is one down behind Huff’s seafood on the right, maybe 2 miles from Wappoo…

There is going to be a lasting ice shortage in Charleston as long as LadyShrimpKilla is still amidst these waters…

You have to look for the one by Doug Heaton Flooring. It is tucked right up against an existing building. Rode by twice before I finally found it.

One right before the corner Hwy 17 and Hwy 41 at the car wash on HWY 17 just before the red light on the right heading north. 1.50 20lbs bulk or 16lb bag. Again very well said Skinneej

Local Boy, Just having fun.

Piggly Wiggly in Quadrangle Shopping Center (about 1000 feet from 17/526 intersection) will fill your cooler for $5.

To Get There:

  • Go to 17 via 526
  • Left on 17 North
  • First left on Skylark, Quadrangle on right

She doesn't pay for ice, that's just how she rolls.

Do you have a freezer? Freeze gallon milk jugs. To use, beat them on the sides with a hammer to crack the ice, then cut the bottom out, and beat the ice into your cooler. You’ll get a lot of big chunks that will last you all weekend. Works for me anyway.
That bulk ice is too wet in my opinion. Melts too quick.
Hope it helps.

Vinman speaks the truth. I learned this trick from him and it is great. Half of my freezer is full of gallon jugs. I hope to be filling that space with shrimp soon and will need that ice.

I have used the jugs (of various sizes) ever since legal shrimp baiting started. we would start with several bottles and remove some as the cooler got fuller… ( is that a word?)

if you go to this one watch closely as it is easy to miss. I have lived on JI for years and just noticed it. Also, the blue wave across the street gives free 5 gal bucket of ice w boat gas fill up so i usually go there.
