Icom M504A wireing help

Trying to figure out how to wire a plug to my new 504 that connects to my Garmin GPS/chartplotter/sounder. The radio has a + and - wire plus 2 wires that are NMEA in and out. The NMEA wires are very small and have an outer woven wire shielding the is a ground (-)! The inner core of the NMEA wires are both positive (+). My Garmin NMEA wires do not have the woven shielding, only the positive (+) in and out. Icom TEC Support tells me to connect the radio shielding to the boat electrical ground and the inner (+) conductors to the Garmin in and out. I got all this! Makes sense to me! Can I wire the radio and the Garmin to a 4 wire flat trailor plug so that the radio is easy to install and remove from the boat? I want some sort of plug so I’m not pulling on individuel wires and take the chance of pulling it out of a connector. The radio will install in an overhead electronic box and the rubberized trailor connector would be semi waterproof and give me a non- FUable and non-bassackwardable way to install and remove it. Does this sound like it will work? Anyone with the same hook up do something like this? Any sugestions are welcome!!!

RCA plug from radio shack…have been using the same setup on a garmin M502 VHF to chartplotter and have not had to replace it yet

Did this on tigress for the nmea2k connection and it worked great. I hooked up everything in my e box so I could disconnect plugs and take the flush panel down to work on things.

On my new boat I will try to use deusche connectors tho… The trailer plugs will do okay because they are much heavier gauge than what’s needed, but they aren’t tinned or oil resistant insulated… I se dielectric grease inside the trailer plugs, and they are never a problem. The weak lik with the trailer plugs is the wire itself…

Thanks Mike! Not sure what an RCA plug is but will look it up!

Thanks Phin! I’m just worried about not wireing each wire to an individule butt connector type thing. I know I’ll get in a hurry sooner or later and pull one loose. Don’t know why Icom would put little shielded wires like that on anything. Maybe because they don’t have to use it?

I kept my NMEA wiring in a “hobby box” from Radio Shack. It’s pretty quick to disconnect if needed.

You want to solder those little guys unless u get miniature stuff from radio shack as suggested. Some good ideas.

RCA plugs are the bigger type audio male and female connector plugs.

Just got off the phone with Garmin. Looks as if the hook up will be a lot easier than I thought! They say, run the shielding to the boat ground and the Garmin Out, to the Icom In and that’s it. I’m not the most electrical guy around but even I can understand that! I don’t have all that fancy add-on stuff. Heck, I have to get the manuals out and brush up on which buttons to push, every spring. Phin I looked at the Deuschel connectors and they look like what I need. The DT series! Where can you buy them? Radio Shack doesn’t have them!

I plan on going into a few electrical distributors and asking if they have kits.

They are all over eBay as separate components. Also a few websites like here

Thanks Phin! I like that site and think, that’s the way I’ll go. Want to also thank ya’ll, for the insight and suggestions. I’m trying to to keep this install, as neat as possible and not looking like the mess of wires behind my computer desk.
