Guys my boat does not have a dsc capable VHF. I found a good used Icom m502. Do y’all know if it has dsc? It does have a distress button but I couldn’t find any info when I searched. Also can I hook the dsc upto my farming 441s? Any info would be appreciated. I know nothing about this feature but I know I want it for when I get the chance to venture offshore.

Brown wire from Garmin to the +nema in on VHF AND THE -Nema in on VHF to ground.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day. FISH 24/7---- 25 Grady w/ a couple of Gas Guzzling 175 Johnsons “O-SEA-D” the old “Havanadaydream”
Forgot to mention then go into Garmin main menu to Configure and turn on your Nema Serial port #1. And turn on all sentencing formatts for that serial port.

I’ve just recently found out this is not a class d radio. So I’m gonna pass on this one and search for a new one. Any recommendations on a new class d for around the $200 price range. There are so many out there it makes my head spin. It seems that I should stick with Icom or Standard Horizon, according to reviews. Is a $400 radio really that much better. I just don’t want to not be able to call for help when I need it.

If you want a new radio I’m all for it. However if I understand what I’m reading, DSC Class D has to do with the radio having two receivers one of which is dedicated to CH 70, that’s for listening for others calls. If you need to transmit a DSC call pushing the distress button the radio will automatically send out a call on CH70. You might go on Icoms website and download the M502 manual, I read it quickly and the 502 seems to have all the usual functions just not a dedicated CH70 receiver. Just a thought.
