Fished yesterday afternoon around a few docks and caught 6 black drum 15.5 in to 19 in. Moved out to middle and caught 5 croakers. Then got stuck on sandbar in front of shem creek. Jumped out and pushed boat 100 yards in 9 in of water. Father says " You know this place is loaded with sharks because all those shrimp boats dump their by catch overboard" Thanks Dad! Then I thought about stingrays. Hit deep water and hopped in and made it to landing safely. The fellas fishing next to us were targeting redfish and we saw them catch 3 that were over slot. Probably 34-36". They were using live mullet. We were using shrimp and cut pinfish.

haha i bet you were walking on top of the water with that going through your head! Glad you made it home ok

pro tip I learned on this site - leave those pinfish whole, hook them through the nose or tail and put them out there. Anything but a state record pinfish will be redfish food (or gator trout or flounder)

Yeah. I have done that with pinfish before. We were not targeting the reds. We were trying to catch black drum and then some croaker for my Grandfathers 90th birthday fish fry. Thanks for your advice. Another tip...Cut small strips of pinfish and use for catching trout. I took my father in law fishing and he was catching more trout on those then I was with live shrimp and menhaden.

Have not tried that with the trout, will give it a shot - congrats to your grandad on his 90th!

I have always caught black drum on accident, how do you target them specifically? Or is it just spot specific and you have to find them? I know they like crustaceans, but thats all I got

Fishing a pier on a curve with lots of current. about 10 feet of water fished on outgoing tide 3.5 hours before low is our target. Stumbled upon them while trying the location for sheephead a few years ago. Very consistent spot from mid August to late October. Just use shrimp for bait. Have caught up to 20 before in 1 spot. I tell you this...Black Drum are tanks ! They fight hard. Not to mention they are delicious.

I fried some a few nights ago and my wife said it was the best fish she ever ate fried, and she knows good fish. It is excellent meat, better than redfish or trout to us.

Very similar here, but I don’t fish piers. They like fairly deep water, 10-20 feet, outside bends with structure/fallen trees, good water flow and the top half of the tide is usually best. Once you find them in a place they are usually always there.

When you say “cut small strips of pinfish” do you mean fillet or just use chunks of the whole fish?

Good question....fillet a piece 1/4" wide and 1.5" long. I was amazed at how many trout were choosing to bite that over the live shrimp and menhaden.
