Idaho and Yellowstone

Anyone fished the Teton around Driggs, the Henry’s Fork at Island Park or any of the streams in and around Yellowstone? Thinking about getting a cabin and taking Debi, she’s never been in real mountains, off for our 20th anniversary. I CANNOT turn this into a fly fishing vacation but I can’t go out there and not take a couple of rods. Also looking for a small cabin, preferably not in a subdivision, for a week. Thanks.

Been going out to Montana and that area of Idaho and Wyoming at least once a year for a long time. Where to stay depends on how much solitude you want vs. how much your wife will be bored if you are too far from town. The Victor and Driggs area is reasonably close to Jackson to do the shopping, rodeo, etc. but is a pretty good drive to the Henry’s Fork. If you stay up near Island Park you are not too far to West Yellowstone. Jackson is more upscale and ritzy, West is cheaper and more junky, both quite touristy. If you fish Henry’s I can tell you a couple of my favorite spots. If you stay near Victor I would recommend the Greys river in Wyoming. A gravel road follows it up into forest service land for about 50 miles. You probably won’t see another fisherman all day. If near West Yellowstone, there are plenty of rivers around too. Stop into Blue Ribbon Flies, Craig Matthews shop, they will be very helpful. Whatever shop you use be sure to buy a few flies or something.

Thanks, Flyvet. Still have a bit of planning to do, including how much Dramamine I will need to get her on another airplane. I got the same impressions of Jackson and West Yellowstone from just reading online reviews. VRBO has some good looking cabins in both the Island Park and Driggs area so we will probably stay on that side of the Tetons. I found a really cool place in Pinedale WY but it’s not for an anniversary trip…however, I’ve got it marked for something down the road that is all fishing. Would like to talk to you more when my plans firm up. Trust me, I won’t go asking a lot of questions without helping the local fly shop’s bottom line.
