Ideal depth for bottomfishing

What is your ideal depth for bottom fishing?

For BSB?

Snapper?

Grouper?

Triggers?

Just curious what depth some of the pros on here are the most fond of.

Not a pro by any means but I catch the majority of my bliners, triggers, and porgies in 100+ft. I fish a lot of low-relief live bottom in 100-120ft and do very well with nice red grouper and scamps from time to time.

Until the last two years, I had actually never caught a seabass on our bottom numbers. Since the closings they have begun to show up fairly regularly. Those bastards are everywhere from the jetties out to 100ft now.

Sells and a couple other guys can give you a better idea as to why you find different fish on different structure at different times of the year.

As a rule of thumb, your bottom fish will be out deeper around the ledge (120-180ft) when it gets hot in the summer and then will push in to wrecks/ledges/live bottom in shallower water (60-90ft) to spawn fall-spring.

Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.

Touche has some good info there.

We usually do not catch bsb further out than like 90 feet. Y-73, rubble pile is covered up with knot heads right now, but if you go to the ledge, there are very few caught there. At least in my experience they are not thick like in 90.

Most of our bottom fishing occurs between 120-200 feet in the summer. Winter time you can get grouper and snapper in shallow. Some areas will hold snapper in less than 50 feet.

Triggers we do well in 120-150 feet and if you learn to read your sounder, you can identify them before you ever drop a bait to the bottom.
