Extremely fun fish to bring in on a medium action rod and reel, catch them on the lake pretty frequently

They will leave tooth marks in a spinnerbait. Fight you all the way to the boat and then open their mouth and release the bait that they were holding. No head shaking throwing of the bait-they were just holding on. Mean critters. Bill Dance claims that if the bowfin had a better PR agent there would not be a Bassmasters!

They suck. They destroy lures, pop lines, eat gamefish, and have a bad attitude with teeth. Oh…and they don’t eat well. Anything else?

Yeap…that’s a nasty ole bowfin aka the mudfish. Use it for fertilizer. They are not much good for anything else.

All that sounds fun to me! Love catching those.

Here’s a few recipes, though I’ve never tried them.

I don’t know why people bash mudfish. You just don’t know how to cook it. This was the fish we ate during the winter when I was growing up and I still prefer it any day to catfish.

You have to eat it fresh, if its not alive when you are cleaning it throw it away. Got to be cold too. You don’t want to eat them during summer months.

Some people talk about some catfish taste better than others. We would never eat a mudfish unless it was caught off Big Pee Dee or Little Pee Dee rivers. That might make a difference, don’t know.

To each his own.

Def. a mudfish!! Any fish that you have to make in a stew or catch a certain time year and remember 15 steps to take for it to be good is a fish I don’t want to catch. After I caught my first one years ago, it was enough. Makes for good eel bait!!

Old timers in my area used to net these fish in the winter months. (Four hole swamp) Everyone ate them and were a winter time prize. The summer months their flesh is soft like mud. I have tried some cooked fresh and its not bad. The filets cook up real light color almost white. I was told to darken the color of cooked filets you put the liver of the fish in the grease while frying. My opinion of the taste is almost as good as well prepared catfish but more rich in flavor. You would eat a few pieces and say not bad. Because of rich flavor a few pieces is all you want. Not surprised by most peoples replies. Times were tough back then people ate a lot of things people turn their nose up to today. They are high in mercury also.
