If you haven't been to Patagonia, better go....

This may be a little far from us but it’s disheartening. My sister lives down in Santiago and said there are huge protests in the streets, but looks like its going to happen

The U.S. has about 80,000 dams. Is that "disheartening"?

ummmm … unless I’m missing something here … the large majority of dams in the U.S. and the rest of the world have historically had major negative impacts on native fish populations and fisheries. Often those dams are a necessary evil, but if anything, “disheartening” is an understatement. I’m with you Hokie, it is sad news. Don’t mean to step on any toes here, just want to set the record straight.

Cool. So, for "the record" should the U.S. have dams?

I only said disheartening b/c I can’t type out what I really wanted to say. If there’s any place in the world that would remain untouched I figured it would be Patagonia but apparently that’s not the case.

Yea, we probably have too many dams in the US, then again some of them have created some great tailwater fisheries, i.e. the White, Green, South Holston etc.

Sure.
There are many “reasons” for the “U.S.”, or any other “country” for that matter, to “have” dams. In my “previous” post I had “already” answered your “question” before you “asked”, when I “stated” that they were “necessary”, yes"?" Perhaps you should “sharpen” your critical reading “skills” before your “next” reply"!"
Seriously though, I meant no disrespect towards you. I have read many posts on this forum and I have learned a lot from them, yours in particular. You know your stuff and I appreciate that. However, for “the record”, in the majority of cases dams aren’t good for fish and just because we have a bunch of dams in the U.S. doesn’t change that fact. Again, I feel your pain Hokie.

Yes, very.

There is no going back. People are going to make babies. And it’s likely that they will build houses and roads and Wal-Marts and…

I actually feel the concern that Hokieflyguy expressed. I spend as much time as I can where nature has held strong against the man-made structures. But… it’s hard to point my finger at other countries when I find it hard to even get close to the coast because, of all the building that we have done along our coasts.

If you put in the effort, there are some pretty nice places out there. Here is one I saw today. I’ve been wanting to get to this spot for years and made the “effort” today. Maybe it’s not Patagonia but, I felt pretty happy being there.
