i just replaced the stator on my engine (1992 Johnson 70 HP two stroke) which appeared to fix one problem but we’ve come upon another - the ignition or kill switch will not turn the engine off. it starts up & runs perfectly fine but turning the key to “off” or pulling the kill switch does nothing to shut the engine down. at this point to kill the engine, i have to pull the caps off of the plugs with pliers.
anyone have any idea of what might be going on?
thanks in advance for any help/advice you can offer up
I have a 1986 Evinrude 70 HP two stroke, assuming these two engines are similar (I know they redesigned in 1992 but I’m assuming the circuitry would be the same) your key switch is probably bad.
If you separate the 3 or 4 prong connector b/t the Power Pack, the ignition coil and the key switch and put an ohmmetter on both the D terminal in the ignition coil end of the connector and the ground, the meter should indicate continuity with the switch off, and no continuity with the key switch on, i.e. It’s a normally open switch. The other thing is that you may have a bad black/yellow stripe lead between the key switch and the ignition coil end of the 3 or 4 prong connector.
thanks for the input as we think we fixed the issue yesterday. the kill switch was going bad and was probably the only issue the whole time. there was no need to replace the previous stator but what’s done is done - there’s no way i can get the money back anyways.
the kill switch going bad, shouldnt have any affect on turning the motor off with the key switch
the powerpack will cause the problem you are talking about, but then, so will having the black and yellow wire wire disconnected
