I'm bored, want to salt kayak fish

I’m currently out of work which means lots of time on my hands. I was wondering if anybody fishes weekdays and would be willing to have a relative newbie tag along. I have fished out of my Tarpon 120 before down there but just not much and really don’t know where to go other than close by to the IOP marina when we come down occasionally on weekends. I live in Greenville, but could easily meet for a crack of dawn start if needed. I’m also a fan of the buddy system, particularly being a newbie.

Edit: can’t spell for squat either, part of being an engineer I guess

I should ad the newbie part is about fishing in the salt out of my yak. I have done plenty of inshore fishing out of a boat. And I fish our upstate lakes all the time out of the yak. I am fully rigged with crate with rod holders for trolling while paddleing and rod storage tubes, GPS, fishfinder, anchor (no trolly system yet). I just don’t know a lot about landings in close proximity to good fishing. Things like gators, One of the times Vicki and I were down there we saw one, fortunately it went the other way. Don’t have a clue what I would have down had it not or had it been a big one. Just would like to learn.

I don’t get to do weekdays. You’re welcome to join in on a weekend when I’m not with clients.

Highlander, i am new to the area and plan to take my yak out for the first time here this weekend hopefully. I dont have any close friends or fishing buddies that fish from yaks so my intentions are to just post something up here on the forum the night before and see if anyone wants to join up.
While i dont have alot of exp. here locally i have fished from my yak just down the river in Georgia and in Jax fl. so like you i am not a total newbie. Im sure we could figure something out. I enjoy larger groups when i go out sometimes, as i enjoy the company at times and the “advice”.
Hope to see you on the water. Justin

Thanks, I may take you up on that. I generally save my weekends for spending time with Vicki. Don’t think it would be right to spend all week playing then go away for the weekend to play. But if you don’t mind her tagging along we each have yaks. She isn’t into the fishing so much (all though when the bite is on she is into the catching), but she does love to paddle and she is not a girly girl (except when the time is right). She yaks, rides here own street and dirt bike, has jumped out off perfectly good airplanes, is a great water skier and keeps up when we take our snow ski trips which usually consists of me, her and three of my other buddies. So if you are OK with that I may just contact you some time about tagging along.

Vicki and her yak at Dewees (sp???) Inlet (I think that is what it is called, anyways the inlet at the north end of IOP), the umbrella is here bimini top

Justin, you must have been posting as I was typing, don’t know what kind of schedule you keep but I will keep you in mind and certainly let you know when we head you way. I agree the more the merrier.

hey guys, I am looking for people to yak the lowcountry with, just recently purchased mine definetly still learning but am looking for some people to get up with because this whole kayaking by yourself isn’t fun and probably not safe either … I work alot but would love to explore and cast a few lines in my spare time

I fish around the Charleston area a lot, but this Friday I’m gonna check out bushy park for the first time. It’s always good to meet some fellow enthusiast. I’ll be there after i drop my wife off at the airport. I should be there by sunrise.

Pro tip, don’t put on pants straight out of the dryer if your freeballin

Justin, I work on Saturdays my usual days that I can take the kayak out are weds and sundays … but I am always up for grabbing a flat at hightide, after work, especially with this nice tide we have this week

So, what is the deal with dealing with Gators. Ever since the time we saw one Vicki has her Glock19 within reach. Probably illegal as all get out to shoot one but I would rather deal with DNR afterwords than with what could happen if one did decide it wanted a snack. Any input ???

Never had any real problems with gators. They usually just watch me paddle by, or disappear under the water. I have only had a 6’er bluff at me once (came towards me with back and tail raised). I just paddled away. There are some big ones up at Bushy, so I just keep my eyes open and give them wide berth. Oh yeah, I’d keep all body parts in the yak as much as possible…

Ya, we did figure that much out. No sitting sideway to dangle the feet. How about when out in the ocean, we were out off the beach last year (it was great paddling in the middle of a pod of dolphins) and wondered about sitting side saddle but still wondered about sharks and other toothy critters. We don’t have to worry about that in our mountian lakes. Get to hot, fall overboard, no problem. Not so comfortable doing that out in that big pond you have down there.
