I'm done!

“that I realize I have the worst luck!..”

Maybe it’s your attitude. I consider myself lucky and blessed to be able to get out on the water, whether fishing from a boat or on the beach. I have come home many times with an empty cooler, sometimes I didn’t even catch anything to throw back. Like I always say, lucky to be fishing, catching is a plus.

I’d rather fish than eat.

A gun in the hand is better than a cop on the phone.

Can you send pics of the boat, seriously.

Messing with you! You seemed a wee bit tense in your post! I’m all for gun control as long as I’m the one controlling it!

It only took me 3 years to catch fish. Not that I’m bragging or anything…:sunglasses: (sarcasm)

My last 3 trips out I was skunked twice and finally plucked a rockin’ 5 fish out of the water yesterday in 8 hours. And I kinda know how to fish. Kinda.

But the sun warmed up, my son was in good spirits (he caught 2 of them), we found a new grass flat we are dying to try, and I wasn’t working. Not a bad day of bad fishing in my book!

It is a little demoralizing when I go out, catch 4-8 trout, and come home happier than a possum eating spam. Then I see someone post on here that they went to the same boat launch, had a horrible day and only caught 15.

Either way, my 4-8 trout will taste better than his pitiful 15 trout lol.

Hang in there, Dustin! Sometimes it can be frustrating when you read all the posts about guys (and Penny) catching fish on a regular basis. However, like Rad said, their success is the result of countless hours on the water. I can guarantee all of them can give you stories about many fishless days. Sounds like you’re doing everything correctly, so just be patient. Also, one of the best pieces of advice I’ve received is to keep a log detailing the dates, times, tides, lure selections, etc. every time you fish so you can build a “database” of what works and when, sort of like a coach’s playbook. Like your quote says, that’s why they call it fishing, not catching…

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

Hang in there man! I’m still learning too. If you have time, I recommend going to some of the seminars that Haddrell’s Point and The Charleston Angler put on a couple times a month. I’ve been to a few and they are very informative, and are usually taught by an experienced guide in the area. I have more $ wrapped up in my fishing stuff than I care to think about, yet I still can’t catch fish. Stick with it!

Sounds like the answer to your problem is right under your nose, take grandpa with you!

I knew you were joking. That why I called you a hippy!:stuck_out_tongue: To all: I truly am okay! I just had a bad fishing trip on a absolutely BEAUTIFUL day! I was just being a pouty punk… My son had a blast and we found ourselves in a creek where we kept going until I was beaching the boat constantly  Pennfish, I definitely don’t take for granted the blessing of the outdoors and apologize if I offended anyone who doesn’t have the same privilege I’m blessed with. Kinda like the scene from Tommy Boy where he is on his sailboat stuck in the middle of the water. "It’s really nice out! I just wish there was some (() wind!" Lol. I just want my boy to catch some (() fish! I have a few Christmas trees that are going to make their way to a secret location on the lake so I can take my son out for some fun bream action! He has a blast even without any fish, but I love his face when he gets to reel one in. I was being a baby, that’s all… I’m mentally stable now! Lmao!

I do catch at the jetties, but MY boat would get SWALLOWED if I went much further past the Yorktown! I need someone to put a solid coat of fiberglass over the whole thing. If I had a bigger motor I could MAYBE make it to the Grillage, otherwise, I wait until a buddy is going out that way in the bigger boat.

You will regret selling your boat…and since you say it is dependable I’m sure you couldn’t replace it for what you have in it. Even when I don’t catch anything I still feel blessed to be out there. So many folks wish they had a boat and could go. I would be able to fish from a dock or bank too…but it’s. oohing like having a boat where you can go wherever you want to. We shouldn’t have to convince you not to give up though…if you really love to fish as you say…then you won’t quit. Besides…didn’t you say you do catch at the jetties? I’m confused.

Don’t give up.

Dustin, You take me back! When I was tournament bass fishing, I can remember driving home without a check and calling my wife and saying, “I’m selling my boat and getting out of this game”. This was the FLW Tour, 200 boat fields, 50 places paid, against VanDam, Roland Martin, etc. By Monday, I’d be studying lake maps for the next tournament…jacked up.
George Smith, aka “The Swamp Rat” and I drove to Edisto, last week and fished with Radaddy all day. We caught 5 trout and 1 redfish. Negative tide, east wind, blaa, blaa, blaa. Now I guided, targeting trout for 14 years and Rad is as good a fisherman as I have ever fished with (George is the best wild hog trapper) and we couldn’t catch but 6 fish. Hang in there, awesome doors are waiting to be opened.

Hey…I’m new to the area … I’ve caught a few fish here and there… The last 6 times out I haven’t even gotten a bite.
I’m a veteran fisherman but not in this area…There’s a lot to learn here…Eventually I’ll get the hang of it…Even if you don’t catch fish, it’s still fantastic being on the water and exploring here…

RADDADDY is on the money, it’s about expectations. When I was starting, I spent about 2 years fishing Clouter creek, and thats about it, BUT I learned that creek in detail, I mean, I can tell you every bit of structure on that entire creek. I had many, many skunk trips because I just didn’t understand where the fish where or why etc. But all you can do is learn all you can by asking questions, going to seminars, hiring a guide, etc. With time and knowledge, the catching will improve. If it was easy, it wouldn’t be as fun!

Learn to just enjoy your time on the water and being in nature, and the peacefulness of it all and you will always have a great time, and your fishing will improve too. I have heard this advice from Bob Sanders, Ralph Phillips and Sandy Stuhr and I apply it every time I launch the boat.

Ditto Dustin, my co-worker just bought a nice 18’ key west and has been fishing hard and has not caught a fish in 5 or more trips. He went out of Remleys Point today up the Wando, hs said he saw alot of people looking for fish checking a spot then moving on, but saw no fish caught. He used mud minnows an plastic but no fish bothered them all day… I see these fish pictures posted but I feel your pain when I fish this time of year too. Hang in there! Sounds like a good boat to hit some shallw flats.

Don’t give up. Especially now in the winter when it is harder to find them. Over time, you will notice where they are. Write it down in a book and keep it updated. And hiring a guide will help you a lot knowing these waters.

Don’t give up… I’ve been a fisherman for 36 years (only 40 years old) - everytime I go out in this area I expect to get skunked. Got skunked this weekend - saw 100’s of slot sized reds, spooked them not once, not twice - but three times. We worked for 3 hours in windy conditions just to find the fish. By the time you could see them, you were on top of them…

I’ve chartered a guide a few times in the area with success on each trip. I done exactly what the guide did in the exact condtions in the exact location(s) and been skunked. Wind/tide/moon/location/bait/rigs/time of year all exactly the same, skunked.

Keep at it - you will find the fish. Put it in a log book and repeat. Find a few more fish and do the same. Before you know it, you will have a few spots figured out and you will catch.
