Josh at Charleston Angler WA set me up with my first fly rod yesterday. I’m super psyched! Took it out fishing today and found out how bad I am! No, really I did Ok but lots to learn… Now I know why people complain about wind. I’m taking a class this month which should help. Can’t wait to catch my first fish with it

Welcome to one of the most addicting sports out there. What setup did you get?
I got a G Loomis Xperience 9’ 8 weight rod and Orvis Battenkill reel. Really like it.
I casted another G Loomis better (forgot which one) but it was a bit out of my price range for a newb.
Josh was great. We tried about 7 or 8 different rods, and he probably spent about 1.5 hrs with me. If you are reading this, Josh, thanks again!

Ok guys, I have a stupid question and I am going to reveal my ignorance here so go easy!! How do y’all transport your rod/reel on the boat? You dont keep it in pieces and assemble/disassemble, do you? I am assuming you can buy a rod holder to hold it? If so, is there one you recommend? Thx in advance. For the investment, you sure dont want it banging around the bottom of the boat…

If I’m not holding the rod and casting it sits in a Ram mount on the front of the kayak that works well. Scotty makes a fly rod holder that does a good job, and if you have a fighting Butt on the fly rod some of the standard rod holders will also work.
