My youngest finally got his first fish OTF today, a nice smallmouth bass:sunglasses: He ended up catching 4 today. They were nailing a little topwater frog popper I got from the Angler in WA. I need to get some more of these. They were caught in a pond on Wescott.
I think itâs a small largemouth⌠The jaw extends past the eye and the color is all wrong for a âbronzebackâ but itâs still an awesome fish I am pretty confident he wonât forget
His casts are still a little âloopyâ but we are working on tightening them up
Don't worry about the loops. He is how ready to move into the next stage of fly fishing. It will be your job to try to keep him away from BAD fly fishing influences. Whatever you do, keep him away from; Colt, nikonjedi, 23Sailfish, rapshizzle, Da Moons, jerms, Mad Mike and me. These are all bad influences that will only teach him that NOTHING is more important than fly fishing. This is a road that can only lead to Trouble with a capital "T".
You can let him listen to âscotty dâ and maybe âHokieflyguyâ but only with close supervision. You donât want to loose him to the dark side of fly fishing.
Haha appreciate it Tyoneon! But Optiker, you probably donât want him anywhere near me. Iâve got 13 rods, thousands of dollars in fly tying gear and my own guiding and tying business. Keep in mind that Iâm also only 24, donât have a consistent job, move across the country every 5 months, canât keep a girlfriend, drink too much and am broke as hell. But I sure do love fly fishing!
Gorgeous bass though. How old is your son? I got hooked on fly fishing tossing frog patterns to bass on my best friends farm pond when I was 10 or 11. If you really want to get him addicted and have him learn a ton about fish behavior go get a 50 gallon aquarium and catch a 6 inch largemouth bass and put him in there. Feed him a steady diet of worms and minnows/goldfish. I just got back to Virginia Sunday (been gone since May) and first thing I did was feed the fish in my farm pond tank. Really hard hobby to give up and its still cool as hell watch the fish, turtles and crayfish eat in your own home. Then get him a starter fly tying kit and heâs well on his way to being totally messed up

</font id=âquoteâ></blockquote id=âquoteâ>Hokie, wait til you hear the stories from the guys I listed as the âbad influencesâ. Trust me. You and scotty D are the âgood guysâ. Fortunately, some of my records are âsealedâ.

Thats it..I took away his fly rod :stuck_out_tongue: (just kidding)
He is 9 and loves to go fishing. You want to see a smile? Look at my avatar <=
25" 4.5# seatrout, the family record by a mile (and released, as a true sportsman would do)
The cool thing is I have pics of all our first fish OTF

and Dad
My youngest had a little more luck casting my ârealâ fly rod with weight-forward floating line. His is a $40 starter kit with no weight on the fly line. I like to cast his but he hasnt got the feel for it yet.
Took both boys back to the pond tonite and they schooled me LOL!
Oldest whacked 'em, with 1 largemouth and 5 bream. Youngest had 3 bream. MeâŚ2 breamâŚ
Great way to spend quality time with the kids
