Got a message this afternoon from a fisheries guy about our recent swordfish landing. Said he had “heard” we caught a swordfish. Called back and initially he didn’t see the report I had filed so was following up on that, but subsequently found it before I had called him back. I cant think of anywhere other than here he would have gotten that information since we did not take it to the marina or have it weighed anywhere. Was very nice and I personally don’t have an issue with it, but thought it was interesting since it comes up when talking about ARS quotas and posting reports about snapper caught while bottom fishing.
I’ve been saying this for years. THEY DO WATCH!!! There isn’t a company or organization out there that doesn’t mine data on the internet… That’s why it’s important to communicate that 100% of your red snapper have a healthy release That’s why it’s important not to post pictures of holding a red snapper by the gills, or a fish with blood streaming out of the gills… When they don’t have good data, they use perception to fill in the holes. Simple as that.

Something I was thinking about the other night…that Fish regs app the feds put out (I think it’s theirs) has access to your camera…wonder if they are accessing pics of fish to use that you have on your phone?
Yes, they do watch, dang near everything. I wonder who watches all the watchers? I got an email from Allstate the other day about a mobile app to store all my insurance information. I thought that might be pretty handy so went to download it. Then I saw they wanted me to give them access to my camera, microphone, GPS location, contact lists, photo galley, other stuff…No fricking way! I’ll keep a paper card.

Good call!!
“If Bruce Jenner can keep his wiener and be called a woman, I can keep my firearms and be considered disarmed.”
“Let’s just sit behind our desk and monitor public fishing forums.”
It’s certainly one way, since they now know there are swordfish to be had off SC. Jeez, from monitoring a fishing forum for catch information to pulling pictures from cell phones, I think mosquitoes must be carrying a paranoia virus …
Fritz they have been fishing that area regularly for reddrum and sharks since the late 1990’s. The schedule is planned months in advance call DNR and they will send it to you. As for the swordfish and other billfish they are just trying to comply with the ICCAT mandated accountability and quota monitoring measurers. For some reason lots of HMS permit holders cant seem to remember they are required to report all landed billfish to NMFS within 24 hours. That’s not even accounting for those who are unaware they even need a permit to begin with.
Yeah, the boat name is my screen name and the name on the permit. He could not find the report under the boat name but once he ran it by the permit number saw it was there all along. By then had already called my phone.

How did he get your contact information? From your HMS permit info?
Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don’t tell them where they know the fish.
Got info from a friend works at DNR, they have full time employees monitor Social Media! Proof, after long standing accusations from a forum member about out of season fish and under sized harvests, we were stopped by DNR one day on the Ashley River on a friends boat. Asked to check our creel he saw Red in the box and said Red Snapper was closed, I said check a little closer and they were 8lb Mangroves! Upon closer inspection he saw several 8/10lb. Lobsters. He looked me dead in the face and said you must be the Bug Catcher!!! Never met the team before! We were legal as always but quit posting ever since. With today’s internet you can say anything and it becomes truth! God has paid that debt in full by the way!
