Thanks for the link. I’ve heard all about night fishing but never got the chance to try it out
Riff, you may want to get your feet wet before jumping all the way in with a sodium light and generator.
Here’s a post from a couple of years ago with some info how to give it a try without spending a bunch of $$$.

wonder why they didn’t show video of them actually catching fish? I’ve always heard stripers are light shy. I’ve also noticed that the bite is better when the bait is scattering, not when its all bunched up together. I have also noticed that when i do catch fish in the middle of the night, its rarely an all night type of bite, more like an hour or two window of good fishing…with very few before or after the prime bite… I certainly understand the appeal of night fishing. Its cooler, its pretty on the water at night, its mesmerizing to see the baitfish circling your light when you are lucky enough to bring it in… The best night fishing is under lights that are always present…in a marina, around a lighted bridge or dam, where the fish get accustomed to the light thats always on and attracting baitfish. I fished Lake Lanier for 5 years and spent many nights hanging out on my buddy’s houseboat in the marina, downlining baits off the dock, under lights and whacking some giant stripers. The marina slips we fished in summer were over 80 to 100 ft of water, and we fishied another slip in winter that was in 30 ft of water. I have tried the same technique on the main lake with hydroglow lights or high-pressure sodium lights but the fishing has never been as good as fishing in the marina so I just don’t do it… Early morning at first light, the bait that has been bunched up under your light, starts to scatter and thats when its generally best. So many times i have dropped down a sabiki rig, jigged up a bait immediately during the night, put it on a hook , and wait and waitand wait for a bite…but those times when its hard to jig up a blueback and you finally get one, usually just after dark or early morning, you put it on a hook and almost instantly it gets nailed… the guys that drift eels at night in chesapeake bay area, drift them near the lighted bridges…they don’t put them out under high pressure sodium lights in the middle of the bay…

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom
I went with a lake veteran last summer a few times and whacked them go rounds when we used sodiums. My brother and I tried using battery powered lights and only caught a few. I did notice that the bite didnt last all night.
Woody,
I knew it was a matter of time before you chimed in. Your just a light hater, lol. I do well with the hydraglow when I pull bait in. Never caught a hog, but many fish under 30". I do agree on the short window. Usually between 10 and 12, but sometimes it keeps going.

When you guys use Hydroglows, do you suspend them at the top of the water or tie some weight to them and suspend them deeper?
top for me

Me too… This time of year I wouldn’t want it down, but I have thought about weighing it down latter in the summer. I went as far as to call Hydoglow last year and they confirmed there weren’t any issues doing that, but I never followed through and tried it.

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
