In the deep 2 26 09

Late start off the dock witch made for a long run. Blew past south ledge with a water temp of 66.5. Ran to 350 feet and found a hard brake 67 to 72.5 We worked this rip for two hours with out a single strike, warm side cold side nothing but a few birds picking. The rip pushed into the ledge late in the morning so we worked that for a while with the same results. After hours of nothing we turned off shore to the 100 fathom line and blue water. There we got one 50 lb. hoo down deep and got cut off on the short rigger by one more. I almost dumped my mate overboard pulling the fish in through the tuna door, I might have to rethink the way we bring wahoo on the boat. We usually just open the tuna door and slid them right into the fish box, but this one made a run for the boat so i put in gear and threw Mike off balance. Good thing he is quick on his feet or we would have had to side him in the door. Anyway beautiful day on the water.

Thanks for the report. That’s good info.

Tram, not sure Mike would mind… Souns like you need Ryan to teach him how to run the gaff, he’s a good teacher. Glad ya’ll got to give it a run.

He can gaff, it was my call to bring the fish in the door if it was hooked well. We tend to do this, it keep the wahoo from going ballistic on the gaff. It usually works nice, just open the door and slide him into the box.

Thanks for the report. How was the ride out. Next break in the weather we will be heading out.

The ride out was nice, light 3 footers. The ride in was even better, 3 foot swells and 34 knots. Cannot of asked for a better day, well maybe a few more bites but it is February! Maybe it was the moon but it was slow fishing.

thats not very wise and more problmatic than just gaffing the fish and putting it in the boat

Tram you just put a funny, yet scary picture in my head. However, pulling really big hoos in the door is a good trick. Just try and save that for the big hoos though.

Tram, thank you for giving us some of that Hoo. Our customer on the big job Zach and I are doing right now loves fresh Hoo so we’re going to give him some tommorrow. Should keep us in Good Standings with them. A few pieces of Hoo can go a long way to our success on this project.

PS. Try not to loose Mike, we like having him around. Then again, getting him wet a few times might not be a bad idea.

Thanks again and good luck.
