In the Market for a Yak

Hey ya’ll. All the fishing I’ve done out a yak is off one I either borrowed or rented. Everytime I went fishing with a yak I’ve had great luck simply because they’re so quiet and they let me access tough spots to get to like tidal creeks at low tide that a boat has no chance of getting through or to.

I’m looking to spend around 350, not anymore than that. I’m looking for a used one obviously and it doesn’t have to be an actual fishing kayak but one I can fish out of. I’m trying to buy or borrow one for the SCV Saltwater Slam on August 11th so I’m not stuck fishing from shore or the pier.

If anyone has any ideas or can point me in the right direction I’d really appreciate it. If not I can pay someone to let me borrow one of theirs for the tourney. Thanks and tight lines.

When you get one, bring it here and ill help you outfit it! Just put some more rodholders on mine for Sunday. Dicks sells some new ones for like 250.00. Let me know when you get one!

Thanks bros.

2fast, Craigslist and patience are your friends. YOu’re right, you don’t need a “fishing” boat to get started. Any decent sot will work with a couple of rod holders and an anchor trolly added.

Definitely go with a SOT, SINKs are are not as fishing friendly.

What’s a SOT? I found a nice fishing yak on Craigslist that’s camo that comes with a paddle, two rod holder, and an anchor on it for 350. I think it was called an Eagle Talon fishing kayak or something, I’m not totally sure but it looked pretty cool.

sot = sit-on-top
sink = sit-in-kayak

When you find one on craigslist, look it up via google and see what it sells for retail and look for reviews. Make sure you get the same model when comparing…

Ryan, that 3503 eagle talon is a good lookin yak. But do not get a SINK, SOT is the way to go

Thanks all. And Hunter, I know. I want it REALLY bad but I don’t know if I have that much money to spend at the moment. I just hope it isn’t gone by the time I get the cash I need.

What’s the yak look like? Can you stand up in it? Can you attach a trolling motor? Does it have rod holders? Does it have a paddle? Sorry for all the questions.

Wait for colder weather and keep checking Craiglist - people will be dumping their kayaks and you might find a deal!

All I know is it is a Ocean Kayak-ish SOT… He’s not a big kayaker so he wasn;t sure of the brand or model. he didn’t fish out of I don’t think, so I doubt it is rigged but he said it is in good shape. he’s moving and needs to sell it. I’ll hit him up again today for the pix… PM me your e-mail address and I’ll send them to you
