inboard fuel pump pick up issue??

anyone ever have a problem with the in tank fuel pump pickup?

back story:
went out last week on a inshore trip. boat ran like a champ(recently had work done) ran out to open ocean, jetties, inshore just fished everywhere my heart desired.

after hitting my last spot i decided to run home. at this point i had burned roughly 27gallons of fuel. boat started acting funny lack of power… boat would not stay on plain once it did it acted like it was starving for fuel. could go from 2000rpms to 5000rpms no issue till boat got on plain.

i tried to run the boat just under 4000rpms would run fine once it went over 4200 started acting up.

got home. pulled water seperator next day and the 2 fuel filters to check for trash or water… was none to be found. i do run non ethonal.

so i decide to drag it down fill it up yesterday. dumped in a bottle of seafoam(do it every other fill up) did my 50:1 mix draged the boat around neighborhood to mix it up.

so i take the boat put it in at the landing. ran the boat up and down the river not a single issue today.

so this leads me to believe it was a fuel issue and i am starting to think either my fuel gauge is way off. (70gallon in tank) or my in tank pick up is not long enough or something odd.

am i missing something??? any ideas. im going fishing thursday if i need sea tow or not lol.

Not much to go on, there. I’d take a spare 3 gallon tank with its own hose with the next fee trips. If the issue returns, go to the spare tank and see if it continues. That would begin to isolate the problem. If the problem continues, its in the motor. If not, its in the fuel tank, lines, or filter(s).

Maybe a partially plugged vent?

Its possible you could have a hole in the pick-up tube allowing it to suck air when the fuel level drops to a certain point or you could have trash in the tank making it to the fuel pick-up and blocking the flow… I agree w/ PalmerScott… Bring along a spare tank and see what happens…

will do… im making a inshore trip thursday so i shall see how it does.

instead of running from the house i am putting in at the bay(conserve fuel) should save me about 30 minutes of run time total.

i ran the boat last night without a hickup and will be doing the same tonight… proably top it off at the marina in the am before i launch. i will pack a spare 5 gallon just in case(thx 4 the idea)

oncei run it a few times and fuel level gets lower i plan on pulling access plate and fuel pump and see what is going on. with it being a 2 stroke visibility is ehh.

guess my winter project is to run all new fuel lines and relocate my water seperator should givem e something to do.lol
