Inching towards a 40 inch Red

I set a goal this year of catching a 40"+ redfish. I want him to wear me out as I wear him out. I want to hold it. I want to kiss it. I want him to gnaw my thumb raw as I release it. I hope it hurts.
Today was another step towards it.

Met up with DFreedom this morning for an attempt at BIG redfish. Started the day in Clouter throwing for bait, of which there was mucho many alot. Stage one of the plan complete.

Headed to the jetties. Beautiful morning, and the seas were behaving. Set the anchor, and dropped a carolina rig mullet down in the depths so I could tie on an anchor buoy. BOOM! Within a minute had the first red, a 31.5".

It was on.:sunglasses:

A short time later hooked, then unhooked, another nice fish. Maybe this is normal, but the big reds didn’t jack the mullet like inshore. It was like they picked it up and kept cruising, so you had to watch you rod tip. Wasn’t expecting that, so on future fish we set the hook.

DF hooked up. A Pretty 28.5". His new personal best. A short time later he hooked up again. 32". A new new personal best.

Probably missed my goal fish a little later. Hooked up, drag screaming, fish thumping and we siezed up and didn’t ditch the anchor and chase it. No good reason, we just didn’t. DOHT!

We missed a few big fish on breakoffs and other issues that are very correctable. First time for each of us going after Redzilla but we are wiser and shall return! Fun day with good people none the less.

Fish caught on whole mullet in rising tide. Bite turned off about 3/4 into rising.

Doug slinging for mullet.

Hooked up!

Fish #1! Hadn’t even spun my hat yet!

Doug’s first red. 28.5".

use 8-10" mullet…live.

you’re not far off.

Fish are too valuable to be caught only once.

Thanks for a great day Vin and for not mentioning what happened to your net right after that cast. You have now infected me with “Big Red” fever. I know you will get that 40"er soon!

Thanks Stretch. We had 2 cob mullet and a bunch of finger and being a first timer I couldn’t get the guts or believe enough to hook the cob. I will next time.

Doug, there is no way I’d tell the cyberworld that on your 2nd cast you completely ruined my 7" net and nearly cost us our day. Telling everyone that would be wrong. I would never do that.

Thanks, I knew I could count on you! I guess you didn’t hit the water today.

Nice read Vin. Thanks

Who has a 7" cast net? No wonder your bait’s too small.

Take some shrimp and a couple small rods and catch some whiting or croaker and fish them live; they make excellent bait for bull reds

Ouch. Ex-yankees:roll_eyes: We were too busy in St. Louis rooting on Cardinals to learn cast netting!

Thanks for the advice, Hairball

Sounds like a great day Vince…And I know exactly where D was throwing that net in Clouter and there is a bunch of like metal re-bar and rock looking stuff (structure) there…Sure enough will tear a net up!!!..but by the sound of your day, it was well worth the net!!!
