We were usually an hour run at about 20kts. Out of courtesy we tried to fish outside the range of the local fisherman. One of the biggest GT bites of the trip came off a bait school that was within 5 minutes of the dock. The other boat stopped and took a few cast on a bait school. The fish never stopped on #30 of drag…
Just curious, was this the trip you took: http://www.gamefishingindia.com/pdf/sample_itinerary.pdf ?
Also, what hotel did you stay at in Port Blair?
I’m trying to get a better idea of the experience and the website has nothing about
accomodations or prices etc.
Looks like a trip of a lifetime. Thanks for the video and pictures.
I knew nothing about this location.

Similar. I fished for 5 days. A friend of mine and tackle shop owner in NJ runs trips as part of their services. This was his trip. I am sure I paid a few extra dollars than if I had my own group. Since 2 of my fishing buddies were already on it, it was like a buddy trip that someone else organized. It made it a bit easier.
It is not an easy trip. You must apply for an Indian Visa ahead of time. Three days of travel to get there. I upgraded to Business Class on the return Dubai to Dallas leg, it was 16.5 hours, worth every penny.
All in, if you have the $5-10,000 in tackle we each brought, was about:
-$3200 fishing, food, board(They own a flat that houses everyone, no hotel)
-$1400 airfare to Chennai, India. Another $300 to Port Blair. Add $1000 for the upgrade on the return trip, you’ll need it.
-$250 hotel in Chennai, I stayed at the Hilton. Free shuttle and breakfast. It was nice to have that comfort after 2 days of travel.
-$couple hundred in spending money.
-$??? tackle.
It could be done for about $5k. Realistically, $6-8K is more like it.
The fishing was awesome BUT don’t go there expecting Cabo, PV or even Panama or Costa Rica. It is remote and very different from our culture. You will likely be well out of your element. Leave the wife and kids at home. No spa or McDonald’s over there…
Thanks for the info.
I’m hooked on Long Range trips out of San Diego. that eats the extra thousands that I don’t have anyway.
I’d love to do a trip like yours some time though.
What’s the best time of year?

killer video as always courtland!
I have to agree with him on the business class upgrade on the Dubai to US trip. I’ve made that flight a couple times now, you are going to want to be in at least business class, the time I flew coach… not so pleasant (ill leave it at that)

My experiences were very similar. You could take a leak anywhere you want unless it had a posted “no urination sign”… If someone wanted to drop deuce, you just found some high grass. Here is another picture from my trip though. This was on my hotel window:

quote:There is talent there, but it's incredibly hard to find because the market is just flooded with "software engineers". For every awesome one there, there are 100 crappy ones that you have to weed through, so it makes it difficult for you to find the great ones. I know some of the larger companies in the US have had limited success finding small pockets of good talent, but even so, they only contract out certain parts of development (User Interface stuff, etc). I also know of large companies (at&t) that experienced a nightmare and ended up pulling out (to some extent) and smaller companies that will likely fail in the end because of the maintenance costs being 10x what they would be if they had it done right the first time. They ended up with crappy\buggy code that costs more to maintain and that real SE's are scared to touch. The best ones are working here in the USA and getting paid a premium. I would be VERY skeptical to do business with a new software company over there unless I had some pretty trustworthy referrals in my hand. Even then, I would be reviewing their work every day. I think that the moral of the story is: you get what you pay for!

I’ve heard of that. What did you think of their English and communication skills? Being in Microsoft, I presume you saw the best. Were they fawning over you because of your ethnicity (bluntly put, “white skin”?)
