Inedible Fish

So growing up I always heard stories about all sorts of species that are no good to eat and the longer I fish the more people I find that debunk those notions.

Shark/dogfish, skate/stingray, ladyfish, spanish/kings, etc.

I know they are all probably edible by definition but what is so bad or wormy that it’s not worth eating?

Can't speak to dogfish or stingray, wouldn't eat a ladyfish, but some fresh spanish or snake kings baked or fried are pretty darn good if you ask me.

It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

Depends a lot on how hungry you are

HA Larry thats exactly what i tell people when they ask me how stingray tasted

I had gar once. The guy that offered me a bite told me it was rattlesnake. It was nasty. Where I grew up in TX, we threw sheepshead back. I was surprised to find out that people on the east coast ate them. I finally tried some and I’ll never throw another one back. I don’t know if they are wormy in TX or what, but they still don’t eat them as far as I know.

If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.

Tried and refuse eat again, Ladyfish, mother-in-law fish ,small stingray not worth it (big uns are ok), possum, armadillo, and crow.

I love bowfin bass out of a deep pond or moving water, while most consider them trash fish.

Dogfish are excellent. I also don’t mind fresh larger pin fish pan fried whole.

My wife doesn’t like fried pork chops… to each there own. I’ll never belittle anyone for eating anything, except poop or ladyfish.

Or what you are able to catch and clean (like my Dad used to say).

-The size of a fish is directly proportional to the time between when it’s lost and the story is told. - Me
-What’s the best eating fish, you ask? I’ve found that for a lot people, its the ones that they happen to be able to catch, clean, and cook. - My Dad

Great White:

Some (not all) shark species are tasty.
Skate and stingray make a great stock for seafood chowder.
Spanish is good if very fresh (same day) and grilled or broiled.
King is the best fish for curry. It is also great on the grill if you marinate it in lime + olive oil + gin.

A fish that is popular in Florida that I find of no use is amberjack.

And gar is NASTY.

Bonefish and tarpon are great fighters, but largely inedible.

Funny, a fellow who fished with me yesterday kept a stingray, said he loves them. Go figure, there ain’t no accounting for tastes.

Really it is good, just too much gristle/cartilage in the smaller ones.

I couldn’t tell you how many Kings I’ve brought home because no one else wanted them. Preparation to most meat is the key.

I’ve had some cobia that was utterly disgusting, due to poor preparation. Also had some wahoo that had too much read meat in it and ruined it for me.

Back to the stingray, I really wonder who has eaten some that was prepared with love.

I have, but I’d rather eat the flounder or the oysters prepared with love.

Ok you win! So would I. I believe I’ve gathered oysters from the same spot you posted on another thread… maybe, does that feeder creek get land locked on dead low?

Yes it does. On both ends. Let’s keep it to ourselves though. If you recognize it, fine, but I ain’t saying exactly where. It’s not on the way to anywhere and few people know it

love fresh spanish and AJ

Pretty sure bonita are completely and utterly inedible however, some people like to pressure cook them and make them in to tuna salad but they can keep em!!

I fish to leave the rest of the world behind. I fish because I respect the fish. I fish because it’s in my DNA.

Hey. I know that spot!
