Thinking about taking the wife striper fishing on Murray this Friday or Saturday. Have fished a couple nights in front of the dam and did fairly well.
Would appreciate any advice on fishing the same or “close” areas in the early morning hours (Daylight - until).
Also, what are the size limits on Murray in August.
Live or cut bait 50-80 feet once you mark a good group of fish. 15 min before first light until 8-9 am are gonna be your best times unless you have a good cloud cover. Like flatlander said, towers to spences to jakes are doing well right now unless you know some good humps close to deeper water (80 plus feet)
Good luck and watch the weather!
Epic Failure=When everyday, run of the mill failure just won’t do
One more question -
Would you anchor or try to “drift” through the area depending upon the amount of fish marked?
I have done it both ways at Santee and done well, but not sure about Murray.
Wind is usually the determining factor on the lower end of the lake. If you can get on a good school of fish I personally will just float on top if not much wind, sometimes you just gotta anchor to hold where you are. Also, if cutbaiting on a hump I will anchor.

Those areas are all close to the dam. drifting would be good if the wind is not blowing too hard. A lot of guys tie off to the towers and do pretty good. I personally find it hard to anchor in 100’+ water.
Thanks for the replies.
That’s kind of what I was thinking.
I agree about the 100’ of water.
I may have a hard time talking the wife into "pullin’ in the anchor more than once or twice.

you can use one of those extension cord reels if you have the storage. it keeps the rope organized and makes it much easier to pull in. just a thought. works for me.
make sure you tell us how you do. bait shops open at 5am FYI
went thursday morning boat and bait in at 530 anchored in 110’ in mouth of jakes at 6 first fish on deck 615 thought it was going to be a good day ended up fishing there, the towers, and the trees on the dam side of spence all in all 22 fish in boat smallest 18 biggest 20 pretty disappointed but was off the water by noon fyi didnt catch anything after 1030 talked to a guy that "said"had 5 keepers in cooler from trolling bucktails and strech25s with lead core but if that was working why was he now fishing down rods at the towers anyway anyone gonna start a lead core topic i dont know anything about it and sounds interesting tight lines to all
Hey Guys, thanks for the info.
Me and the wife tried it Friday morning without any luck.
Tried the towers all the way out to the other side of Spence island.
Did anyone else have any luck Friday, or was I the only one that came out empty-handed?
Put it this way, everyone is gearing up for september. everyone is just bored and go fishing. when september rolls around its all buisness…lol… for some, to me its another good day on the lake
water temps start coming down from there blistering 84+degrees bigger stripers are caught i personally still fish the same areas as i do in the summer but i believe alot of people start fishing up lake in some of the smaller creeks, but then again people do that all year too. just my opinion but i think september is like the opening month for striper “season” but hey some people will probably say something else, the real question is what is september to you my friend?
it means one less day of the week available for fishing (saturdays). it also means if sunday morning fishing, must be home by 12:30, showered and in the recliner with cold beer in hand by 1.
well, clemson football, bow season, take your pick. i was turned on to fishing for striper in the winter last year while they were schooling. first time i had ever done it and i freaking loved it. problem was, i didn’t start until january and i hear they school even better in november and december. thats why i was askin. like i said, this will be my second year doing it so i still am a little ignorant to it right now.
